Starring:
Captain Silva
Private Dante
Sergeant Iona
Private Zmijewski

Death Counter: 2

The team’s reward for enduring a warzone of tanks, turrets, and weaponized biohazards is a nearly destroyed fortress filled with ominous black resin, echoing screams, and lots and lots of cocooned bodies.

Welcome to Fort Nebraska.

Captain Silva had led the team into the western entrance of the Northern Bastion, the only structure still standing.

They have three goals: restore power to the facility, convince the Fort’s AI to re-enable the space elevator, then use the elevator to get the hell off this planet.

Unfortunately, power can only be restored on sub level 2. The elevators aren’t operational, though the marines debate trying to open and check them out anyway.

There’s an access ladder further into the facility — plus a medical station and armory for resupply.

But there’s the issue of the aforementioned cocooned bodies.

The marines aren’t fools. They’ve seen what happens, and Wilson confirms it. These bodies are hosts, incubating the monsters.

While Silva yells at Wilson, Dante walks up and shoots one in the head. That works to prevent a premature birth, but triggers another body to convulse, as a chestburster explodes out!

Zmijewski is nearby, and wielding the incinerator. He unloads on the creature, burning it and the dead body to a crisp.

The noise causes more bodies to convulse, and soon the party is facing down three more chestbursters!

Zmijewski gets the drop on them again, and again lights one up. Fire = good!

But when an extremely stressed out Dante (10 stress!) tries to fire at another, she panics and goes berserk, turning and shooting Silva!

Thankfully she only grazes the Captain, but the result is a cascade of hilarious failure, as the other marines all panic in turn.

Silva shoots Zmijewski — but his armor deflects the bullet. Then Zmijewski, wielding the scary incinerator, turns and flames Dante!

All three marines are left catatonic after the embarrassing shoot-out. With friends like these, who needs enemies?

As a weird blessing, Dante’s fiery body deters the two chestbursters, and they flee into nearby vents.

Iona and the others are able to put out the fire, and the marines, weirdly barely scathed, come to.

Thankfully a small bit of salvation is at hand. The nearby medical station holds two powerful drugs, which Silva passes out to Dante and Zmijewski. The marines lower their stress to zero as a sense of calm washes over them.

Armed with drug-fueled confidence, the marines march forward through the facility, noting empty, burned out offices. The black resin coats everything, and their motion trackers detect slight movement within the nearby maintenance shafts.

The armory is clear of enemies, though all the equipment is stuck in that hardened goop. Dante is able to pry out a pair of incinerators. She takes one and gives the other to Silva. The marines remember that fire is super effective against these creatures — as long as they don’t burn each other.

Heading east they arrive at the access ladder, and discover that it only goes to the second floor. No basement access. Crap!

Zmijewski hears scraping and scribbling sounds and bounds out of there. He first suggests they burn and destroy the shafts, but Silva is skeptical about the consequences. Then he suggests blocking all the shafts, and the team quickly agrees. They use nearby rubble and detritus, along with their incinerators, to create a hasty blockade at each exit point.

They have two options, make it to the other ladder on the other side and hope it goes down, or retrace their steps and try to elevator shafts.

They opt for the devil they know, barricading the shaft exits along the way as they make their way back to the western lobby.

The party has made exactly zero progress, other than drugs and weapons.

No more signs of aliens, which is good, at least.

They pop open the northern elevator shaft, finding it full of smoke. Not a great sign. Fei2 also informs the team that radiation levels are higher down there. Wonderful.

They try the second elevator shaft. Zmijewski pops his head down and sees a black, serpentine shape unfolding itself at the bottom. The alien drone hisses and begins climbing up the shaft with its long black claws.

Yikes!
