We barely hear each other over the roar of the rapids. Scarlet and Kethra work furiously to keep our little rowboat from capsizing.

TIM is mumbling and waving his hands, magically calming the water around us. I nearly break his concentration when I scream, “Waterfall!”

Ninety feet. Eighty feet. We’re soaking wet, crashing waves slamming into us as we approach the drop. Seventy feet. The boat lurches sideways, but Scarlet grunts and keeps us upright.

Forty feet. TIM is unnervingly calm, fighting nature itself. Styx, flying somewhere above, cackles gleefully.

Twenty feet.

A school of fish darts away. Was that a larger form in the water? It’s my last thought before we hit the sky, and my stomach drops out.

I open my eyes. We’re in the air, still in the boat, gently descending downward. My hands are still desperately clinging to the side of our battered rowboat. TIM is still chanting, keeping some water around us, but the rest of us look around in bewilderment.

Then we see her. Gillian. Triton. Emissary of the Sea, floating beside us, keeping us gently wrapped in her Featherfall spell.

I led them through the forest. A living forest, very much aware of our presence. The warforged, TIM, tried shouting at it, only to get a mass of barbed vines waving in his face. “Calm,” I reminded, as if speaking to unruly children.

We’d survived a night and a day in here, and I was not about to be killed because these fools wanted to poke and prod.

Muttering to myself, I turn a corner, stopping suddenly in my tracks. A red-skinned woman is floating off the ground in front of us. Her lower half is a mass of writhing tentacles, and she’s armored in black iron.

When she speaks, her voice barely raises above a whisper, yet echoes ominously through the woods.

“Hello there little mortals, it’s lovely to meet you,” says the demon. “I am Irathon. What might your names be? And what exactly are you doing here?”

My hands fly to my crossbows and aim them at her head. I whisper one word in response, not taking my eyes off her. “Demon!”

“You didn’t answer my question,” said Kethra, staring down the trio of odd tiny creatures, our apparent captors who were in need of our skills to save their world. “You were close to him, you must know your master’s weakness.”

‘The Master’ was what they called a powerful planar wizard, the creator of this domain they called Anonyma, a refugee world for displaced creatures and biomes. He’d disappeared, and now their world was threatened by invading armies of demons and angels.

And they turned to us as a last line of defense, which I’m pretty sure we never signed up for.

“And that’s the first lead we have,” said the magical cat Rycresh. “As far as we know our master has only one weakness: Marina. His lover. She lives here on this plane. If he told anyone where he was going or what he was doing, it might be her.”

“She’s not nice though,” said the tiny fairy, Thyxia.

“No she’s really not,” said the small hairy man called Feogh. “She would be your first contact, but it ain’t gonna be easy. He loves her you see but, she’s a dangerous, vile woman. She’s a druidess, but she has a bad habit of wiping out civilizations she thought were encroaching on the wild.”

“We do know that Master have her a grove so she wouldn’t hurt anyone anymore. He visits her from time to time,” said the fairy.

“Alright, show on us on this map where we can find her,” said Scarlet.

Roll20 Review – Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden

Adventure through the Ten-Towns region of Icewind Dale and beyond in this frozen-themed campaign for levels 1-10.

After several lackluster main campaign adventures exacerbated by bare map quality, I wasn’t sure what to expect from Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden, a supposedly horror-themed adventure that takes place in the frozen north of the Forgotten Realms, involving the goddess of winter herself.

The result is a surprisingly effective open-world campaign with a modular approach to campaign-building, combining three separate storylines that takes players from the Ten Towns region, across the Sea of Moving Ice, beneath vast glaciers, and into an ancient buried Netherese city.

MAJOR SPOILERS – DM’s only!

Descending another staircase, we saw a pair of gigantic lion-like creatures with silver horns, radiating with celestial energy, a deva held a spectral axe nearby. “Come, children of another place, bow your heads before me, I wish your deaths to be as merciful and painless as possible.”

“Thanks!” said TIM.

“That’s bullshit,” I muttered. Turning to Scarlet I whispered, “How pissed would you be if I rained hellfire on these creatures?”

Naturally, Scarlet looked taken aback. “No! We do not rain hellfire on angelic beings. I’m just going to go talk to them-“

She strode forward. Without a word, Kethra darted out and tripped her, sending the heavily armored paladin crashing to the floor.

I begin harnessing the demonic energy in my body, my hands glowing hot as a ball of fire begins to form. My demonic heritage becomes unmistakable, skin reddening, horns itching, eyes glowing.

To their credit, my newfound party members only nod in affirmation as I hurl a fireball into the celestial creatures.

The fire explodes into the creatures, flames licking at their bodies. “Perhaps not as innocent as I imagined. No mercy for you then.”

The angel had fallen, but the growing mass of tentacles remained. They try to grab us. Gillian summons a cloud of daggers, while Kethra severs a tentacle that was wrapped around Scarlet.

But the tentacles were oblivious, and unending.

I recall the message from the bellboy. Something about speaking with the tentacles?

“Which one of you tentacles can speak the common tongue?” I call out.

I receive curious looks from my new party members. But in response, several tentacles dive straight toward me. Taking a chance, I let them envelop my legs.

As soon as two tentacles wrap around me, I hear a calm, slow voice in my head.

“Hello there. Can you ask your friends to stop hurting me?”

Scarlet struggled within the tightening grip of the gigantic, spectral hand. She’d attempted to knock on a door, only for the door to respond by grabbing her. TIM and Scarlet tried to dispel the magical ward, unsuccessfully.

Sometimes the simplest solution is the best. After watching Styx nearly yank her hair out with his laughably poor strength, I braced myself against the wall and shoved against the fingers. Gillian ran over, grabbed the heavily armored paladin and yanked, pulling her free.

“Maybe next time we look twice before we knock, yes?” I couldn’t help but glower at the paladin’s heedless, optimistic attitude. How has she survived this long? “By the way,” I added,” there’s an angelic being in the next room, fighting some tentacles-“

“Angelic!?” Scarlet cried. Before I could finish she ran through the shards of the nearby broken door, crying out in a Celestial language, presumably praising the damn thing.

Through the doorway we could see the statuesque winged man turn to her, tears in his eyes. “Oh, faithful child,” he said, “I am so sorry. I had hoped only evil would be in this tower. That would have made things so much simpler. By the order of Rahmael, commander of the incursion of this plane, all creatures in this place must be destroyed.”

The angel tucked in his wings, and hurtled toward us.

We descended the stairs, I and my strange companions. A warrior-triton. A warforged healer. A rather talkative paladin.

They were odd, yet oddly comforting. I could sense hardened resolve, unshakable bravery, and foolish pride. Fellow adventurers.

The next floor held doors in each direction. The shadowy rogue – some elf blood in her, no doubt, crept towards the west, where we heard a woman screaming for her babies. The concerned paladin wasn’t far behind.

The door was destroyed. Peeking in we saw a winged demon carrying a large fork and hurling balls of flame at some trees and shrubs. One of the trees had the face of a person, and was sobbing in anguish.

Normally I wouldn’t care about a damn tree. But my hands instantly went to my crossbows as I laid eyes on the demon. Adrenaline coursed through my body like a raging fire as I cast a protective ward.

The paladin, Scarlet, was trying to speak to the demon. I couldn’t help but grin when it snarled back. I materialized from the shadows, took aim, and peppered its body full of bolts.

This may be a strange place, but this feeling was all too familiar.

The demon snarls, saliva dripping from its maw. A bolt sinks into its chest. It drops to its knees.

I stand over its body, leveling the crossbow at its head. We both know another shot will send it back to hell. But I have a question,”What is Anonyma?”

“Not what,” the demon hisses.

Another voice suddenly cuts in, “He’s almost here of his own volition.” A human voice?

I whirl around. My eyes glow red with demon-powered magic, but see nothing. “Demon-killing is a niche skill set, but a useful one,” the voice continues.

I look back to the demon, but see confusion written on its ugly face. A green light surrounds me, and everything turns black.
