We’ve had several show-stopping boss encounters throughout the campaign, including the Steel Predator, a Zombie T-Rex, Tinder the young red dragon, and the King of Feathers. None of them hold a candle to the extra-long, single-encounter session that encompassed the beholder boss fight on the third level of the Tomb of the Nine Gods.

After chasing Yakka the cursed skull halfway through the dungeon last session, the party found themselves in a watery hallway. From there they explored the entire northeast side of level three, including rotating crawlways, shadow-horrors, and a coded tile floor.

Jeremy Crawford has his love of role-playing and voicing hags – I have my animated skulls. The flameskull from Wave Echo Cave, the chamber of skulls from The Weeping Colossus, and now Yakka the cursed skull from the third level of the the Tomb of the Nine Gods.

Yakka became such a centerpiece of the session that the party had to deal with it as soon as possible. Thankfully we collectively dealt with both Yakka, and that pesky Nangnang-possessed Gray Slaad, in one fell swoop.

Combat is always on the table in D&D. I was fully prepared for a violent end to the dialogue session with Mr. Withers, but I wasn’t prepared for one player to break off and start a whole different fight somewhere else.

You never quite know what your players will latch onto, whether it’s a certain NPC, a specific storyline, or a magic item. In my case, I’ve been delighted by how much my players have responded to role-playing their primal god possessions – much to their own detriment!

Last week’s session ended in a cliffhanger, with Mannix waking up the mummy inside Wongo’s tomb, with only half the party beyond the wind blade tunnel. The mummy emerged and showered waves of fear using its Mace of Terror, but all three PCs in the room made the save.

Annoyed, the monkey-mummy punched Mannix with a Rotting Fist – a crit, and down goes Mannix. Roll for Initiative!
