Keys from the Golden Vault Session 27

Elowen shows up to an intense firefight and melee battle at the Agile Hands Stables between the party and the Zhentarim, who have been using the attached house as a hideout and base of operations in the city.

Varrow, having run through the Stables and second story of the Inn, uses his grappling hook to swing across toward the hideout, though struggles to break into the window.

Most importantly, the magically disguised Chéri learns critical information from his use of the suggestion spell on the Zhentarim mage, Gregir.

The magical painting they’re after isn’t here!

The Zhentarim did steal it, but they already delivered it to a location called The Vault, another safehouse in the city

The spell wears off, but Chéri maintains the deceptive disguise, which only further confuses the poor mage when the real Zhent agent shows up shouting that he’s the real Marvus.

Taveen follows Stayzie up the staircase, finding her battling half a dozen spies and agents, including Arlo himself. The monk stuns the Zhent leader with a stunning strike, though provokes the ire of the other agents, who pepper him with arrows.

Chéri activates his sending stone earring to inform the rest of the party about the painting. They need to get out of here! Plus, they’re terribly outnumbered, and taking a lot of damage.

Stayzie grabs the weakened Taveen and the stunned Arlo and charges back down the staircase, with the rest of the Zhents yelling and chasing. 

Varrow breaks into a second-story window and quickly follows Stayzie, dropping a fog cloud to aid their escape — though it’s quickly dispelled by the Zhent’s cleric, Tosh.

Chaos ensues, though Taveen gets off a critical stunning strike on Arlo, keeping him knocked out, while he and Stayzie rush out the door, still carrying the stunned rogue.

They find Elowen battling agents with a confused Gregir, while Chéri runs toward the stables.

Varrow is the last to leave and jams the front door shut, and drops another fog cloud outside the door.

Thanks to the confusion, the party sprints down the main road, but Chéri has one final idea.

The wizard runs into the stables, opens several stall doors, and uses his last 3rd level spell slot to conjure the major image of…. a “sexy horse.”

He has his illusory mare quickly trot away toward his escaping friends, hoping that there are enough, er, interested males that will follow.

With an Animal Handling check, Chéri mounts an engorged horse *coughing fit* and leads the others toward his party, where they’re able to steal the horses and escape much more quickly.

It’s a hell of an ending to a major battle. Plus, the party made it out of there with an important captive: Arlo, the leader of their rival Zhentarim group.

They know where they need to go, and should get even more info out of Arlo, though with the mess they left behind, time isn’t exactly on their side.
