Keys from the Golden Vault Session 29

Having it made it to the art gallery room (T6) with no magical painting in sight, the party are forced to continue their search through the Zhentarim Vault.

Glancing at Arlo’s layout map, Stayzie is eager to rush into the next room and dig through the weapons and armor.

Unfortunately, rushing into (and out of) rooms is proving quite painful, as she triggers another fire-breathing statute trap! Then when she enters the room (T7), two of the suits of armor spring to life: guardian Helmed Horrors!

With their 20 AC, 70ish hit points, and multiattacking force swords, the Helmed Horrors prove formidable opponents.

After taking some nasty hits, Stayzie lets a croc-shaped Elowen do some tanking, with Taveen striking while riding on the croc!

A door opens in the armor, as a guard pokes their head in, drawn by the fighting. They fire off their crossbow at Chéri before retreating further into the zoo room (T8).

The cages are full of crowded, agitated animals, including a pair of displacer beasts. 

Stayzie chases after the guard, and nearly cuts them down before the guard reaches one of the cases to release one of the tentacled-panther monsters.

But, Chéri had cast invisibility, after his enhance strength plan fell through, and he could easily close the gate before the monster got loose.

The wizard then chased after the guard, who had fled into the northern room, a library (T9).

Seeing the guard oddly in the corner, the invisible mage stepped onto the rug in the middle of the room, feeling an odd tingling sensation.

He responds by picking up and throwing books around, which triggers the newly spawned invisible stalker to attack him — knocking the wizard unconscious!

As the other half of the party finishes off the tanky constructs, they rush through the animal room to help Chéri.

Elowen leaves croc form to blast the stalker with starry wisps, while Taveen rushes forward to apply his hand of healing to Chéri.

Unfortunately, the elemental simply uses vortex again, downing the wizard again!

Varrow whips out his pipes of haunting, greatly upsetting all the animals, but most importantly, making the stalker frightened, and unable to approach further!

It grapples Taveen and looms over Chéri’s body, but the party rallies and piles on the damage, especially Taveen, whose magical fists deal pure force damage.

Finally they destroy the nasty creature (and the nearby guard, who was unable to activate the secret passage in time).

Elowen heals Chéri while Stayzie rushes back to the armory to find some nice +1 half plate, a +1 shortword (which the gnome rogue eagerly takes) and a +1 spear.

The party has nearly finished with the first floor of the Vault. Hopefully the painting is somewhere upstairs…
