Previously on Call from the Deep

Starring:
Gotwald Ironhorn, level 9 minotaur Rune Knight Fighter
Mac, level 9 tortle Drakewarden Ranger/Rogue
Savra Akkedis, level 9 lizardfolk School of Necromancy Wizard
Torrel, level 9 kenku Fathomless Warlock Pact of the Amulet/Fighter

After being separated for an entire session, the party finally reunites under a tense situation: Mac seemingly trying to escape with the Storm Maiden’s crew.

Having pass without trace and fog cloud gave the pirates cover, but having to jump into the water had alerted the Zoo Crew, having finally arrived to the underground river, and Savra responded with entangle.

The DM put everyone into initiative order, leaving it up to the dice, and Savra won handily.

The lizard wizard calls out, not sure who’s there, and demands they identify themselves.

The Storm Maiden gestures to the exit behind them, and the others nod. Everyone remains silent, even Mac.

Savra responds by casting synaptic static in the general area (which doesn’t require sight), nailing the entire pirate crew, as well as Mac and nearby Gotwald!

Nearly everyone fails and is muddled, and one of the injured pirates crumples down dead. Mac drops unconscious, and the pirate wizard loses concentration on fog cloud.

The Storm Maiden had been told tales of the dangers and ruthlessness of this crew, and she’s prepared to fight to the death, while yelling for her crew to escape to safety.

Torrel rushes up to revive Mac with a healer’s kit, and the pirate wizard casts gust of wind, knocking poor Gotwald back.

Savra continues to berate and threaten the Storm Maiden into surrendering — which doesn’t go over well with the hardened pirate warrior. She screams and charges, stabbing at Savra, who’s put up multiple shield spells to ward the blows.

This time Savra casts gravity sinkhole, wiping most of the crew (and nearly downing Mac again), while Torrel cleans up the rest.

Mac experiences a compelling crisis. He was planning on going deep undercover, but that plan has blown up quite spectacularly. He turns his bow on the Storm Maiden and fires.

Miss!

Fires again.

Miss!

He can’t do it, he can’t shoot her!

call from the deep ironhand cairn storm maiden

The Storm Maiden is enraged and horrified at the destruction that Savra wrought, but Gotwald gets in her face, forcing her to deal with him. But she’s muddled from the psychic spell, heavily wounded, and surrounded.

With her crew slaughtered, she finally goes down, though not after another volley of dramatic misses from Mac.

Gotwald was willing to let her live, if he had struck her down (and to interrogate her!). But Savra was having none of it with her elemental blasts, and Mac was trying to give her a warrior’s death.

With the area finally clear, the party helps themselves to her substantial loot pile, as she (and Mac) defeated the actual boss of the dungeon and looted the sarcophagus last session. They grab her javelin of lighting, arrow-catching shield, folding boat, and two custom items from the tomb: Ironhand’s Reckoning (greataxe), and Ironhand’s Plate (plate armor).

Gotwald claims both items, which helps mitigate his continuing curse and deformity from the fomorians.

They also find a magical compass that does not point north, but to the southeast. Toward the Nelanther Isles. Toward Tentrix?

They have one more stop, however. The second location provided by Callous: Narino.

Back on the ship (and a long rest), Borgas tells that he visited Narino in the past: ruins of a human city that sunk beneath the ocean, and became inhabited by merfolk.

When the party arrive, there’s nothing but open ocean. They have to go down!

Torrel and Mac are the best equipped for diving, with Mac’s cloak of the manta ray, and Torrel’s Fathomless subclass.

They dive under for hundreds of feet. The light from above dims before they begin to see the ruins. Much of the area looks overgrown and crumbled, and not a single merfolk in sight. The only notable building is a large temple.

Swimming nearby is a large creature, which they identify has a giant shark.

call from the deep narino shark

Mac and Torrel stealthily swim by to reach the temple. As they get close, they see the shark has rigging, harnesses and straps, similar to what the party saw when the sahuagin arrived on giant sharks in the siege of Neverwinter. Mac’s nat 20 on Animal Handling tells him the giant shark is highly trained, but also currently agitated.

And what would agitate a shark? Blood in the water!

Curious and brazen to a fault, Mac casts speak with animals and talks to the giant shark.

Unable to see Mac, the shark is instantly suspicious, but Mac’s Deception as a sahuagin minion wins out.

The shark reveals that he’s the prized mount for the mighty Captain Dhurge, another one of the pirate captains under Sea King Tentrix.

Dhurge and company arrived here and told the shark to wait. But since then, the shark has smelled blood in the building. He’s too big to go outside, and he was told to stay, regardless.

Mac sympathizes, offering to bring the shark some food, and he and Torrel swim over to a broken wall to peer inside the building.

Already they can spot blood in the water, surrounding a floating corpse of a sahuagin. They enter to investigate further, leaving Savra and Gotwald waiting on the ship above.
