Previously on Call from the Deep

Starring:
Gotwald Ironhorn, level 9 minotaur Rune Knight Fighter
Mac, level 9 tortle Drakewarden Ranger/Rogue
Savra Akkedis, level 9 lizardfolk School of Necromancy Wizard

Having escaped the mervampire’s den and defeated another of Tentrix’s Pirate Lords, the party regroups back on their ship, short rests, and heads toward their only other destination: Tentrix’s supposed lair in the Nelanther Isles.

But before the day even ends, an enemy ship is spotted in the distance, a massive war galleon sporting twin sharpened rams like fangs, and black flags sporting the symbol of the Black Armada.

The enemy ship starts 600 ft away, but barrels quickly toward the party’s much smaller ship.

Mac is riding his new friend, Sharkey, the giant freakin’ shark, and former trained animal mount of the now deceased Captain Dhurge. With a nat 20 Animal Handling check (and another casting of speak with animals), Mac convinces Sharkey to charge toward his former masters and obey his commands. Like a submarine destroyer, Mac and the shark turn and disappear.

Meanwhile, Gotwald, Savra and the rest of the crew are left with few choices. The larger ship is faster, better equipped, and crawling with yuan-ti pirates — captained by Pirate Lord Desecratis Profanus, a spirit naga straight outta Chult.

As an experienced sailor, Gotwald knows the smaller ship has better maneuverability. He suggests they act like they’re fleeing, but then to turn at that last second, to avoid getting skewered and pinned by those nasty giant fangs.

call from the deep ship battle

For several tense rounds the enemy ship makes gains while the two ships fire ballista shots at each other from long range, hitting various crew. At one point a redshirt scout is killed by an arrow, but the party must press on.

Mac and Sharkey quickly arrive alongside the galleon, and Mac leaps inside an open porthole, finding a room with one of the anchors.

However, he also finds two yuan-ti broodguards.

Before they turn around, he quickly uses his hat of disguise to turn into a yuan-ti, and does his usual Mac “hello fellow snakefolk.” But the contested Deception check fails, and the broodguards attack, hitting Mac with multiple critical strikes.

call from the deep pirate ship

Back on the deck, the yuan-ti ship has a surprise up its sleeve. After getting closer, they launch a large metal ball from a mangonel, which lands on the player’s ship. The ball opens, and several yuan-ti emerge and attack!

Savra evades a constricting attack from a malison, then casts fear to send it running (slithering) down the ship. Gotwald barrels a broodguard over the side of the ship, and both triton allies activate their gust of winds to send another flying off into the water.

Then the galleon races up right behind them, Gotwald yells, and the crew pull the ship to turn alongside, avoiding getting pinned, but putting them right up alongside an enemy pirate ship crawling with hostile yuan-ti.

Then Savra casts sickening radiance on the whole dang ship!

Below deck, an injured Mac defeats one of the broodguards, and pushes the body onto a nearby lever, sending the anchor tumbling out and into the water. The war galleon jerks and slows, losing some of its limited maneuverability, just as the battle really begins heating up.
