I still choke up a little bit when the words STAR WARS explode onto the screen and that John Williams fanfare kicks off. I had a bumper sticker in high school that proudly declared “My Other Vehicle is an X-Wing Fighter.” I read the books, played the video games, loved the re-releases in the 90s and the prequels in the early aughts (before we all collectively came together and declared them bad).
I’m a Star Wars fan, and I enjoyed The Last Jedi.

You deserve better than this, Carl.
The 90-minute mid-season finale unfolded pretty much as I predicted, with the Saviors striking back swiftly and brutally against all three communities. I did not expect it to end with a far left field bomb drop in the discovery that Carl has been bitten, and his days are numbered.
We picked up right where last week left off, with Rick, Jadis, and the Scavengers approaching the now walker-less Sanctuary. That’s a dumb idea; gunfire erupts from the building, and the Scavengers scatter. So long subplot that went absolutely nowhere! Remember when I recapped the Savior-focused episode earlier this season and mentioned it was fine, provided they kept those to a minimum? Well you done screwed up, The Walking Dead. Just two weeks later we get yet another extended peek into the crisis at Sanctuary, this time centering on Eugene, which makes it an even worse episode.
Based on our last look at the Saviors, I was lead to believe that the show would follow the comic route with Eugene escaping with the Saviors’ doctor (whom was taken from the Hilltop) to deliver him to pregnant Maggie (at the behest of Father Gabriel). Instead the actions laid out in this week’s episode pushed Eugene even further into the arms of Negan and the saviors, though with some notable alcoholism side effects. Big comic events, the kind which Marvel pulls out once or twice a year, have what are called tie-ins, or companion comics. These are side stories that take place during the big event, usually focusing on minor characters and subplots within the larger event framework.
This week’s episode of The Walking Dead is their tie-in episode, focusing on several smaller side stories while the Savior base of Sanctuary is still under lockdown from our group’s initial attack.
As the title indicates, three of our stories involve the leaders of each of our united communities. I enjoyed the cold open, where each leader narrated their war-like Letters from the Frontlines to each other. Our group has won numerous battles, but not without cost, including Aaron’s boyfriend Eric and all the fighting members of the Kingdom. It was bound to happen. After four solid weeks of exciting war-torn battles across multiple fronts that all took place within the same day (maybe even the same hour), we finally had to return to Sanctuary to check on the Saviors.
We opened with a flashback – that Savior meeting Negan had claimed to be a part of when our heroes attacked in the first episode. All the Savior leaders are there, including Simon, Eugene, Dwight, and Gregory.
The meeting is framed around Gregory trying to appeal to Negan and the rest of the Saviors that yes, he’s still in charge of the Hilltop (he’s not) and that yes, he can get them to stand down (he can’t). Some of the Saviors suggest they give the Hilltop an ultimatum, but Negan is not having that. Continue reading “The Walking Dead Season 8 Episode 5 “The Big Scary U” Recap”
Thus far on The Walking Dead season eight we’ve been shifting around to multiple points of view throughout the war with the Saviors. This week we were treated to a much more focused, slow-paced, and emotional episode as we follow the one team that ended up drawing the short straw and suffering immense loss: King Ezekiel and the Kingdom.

Where’s my Episode 2 recap? Turns out Polygon will not be running weekly Walking Dead recaps this year. This news came a bit late, which meant my recap for episode 2 had been submitted and even contracted, but probably won’t be published. I’ll be resuming weekly recaps here on my website, but alas episode 2’s recap will remain in limbo.
The Walking Dead continues with its all out war storyline, much to its benefit. We’re on the third episode and we’ve covered maybe only an hour, as we continue to see Rick’s offensive strategy play out in three different fronts.
Well, two fronts anyway. Once again the Kingdom group with Carol and King Ezekiel have little to show but stirring speeches from Ezekiel, along with a montage of mowing down saviors using obvious ambush tactics. They get there comeuppance at the end of the episode, and we’ll get to that in a bit. Continue reading “The Walking Dead Season 8 Episode 3 “Monsters” Recap”
