The party partially recovered from the battle in the now shark-free seaweed room on the second floor of the Sahuagin Stronghold (area 39).

Kysh the triton looks at their map, confirming that the large central room is a temple, and if there’s anything particularly nefarious happening, it would be there. Thankfully it’s also on the way to the stairs leading up.

The party swim east, then south, using Mac to scout ahead for potential danger.

Mac spots another barracks filled with even more sahuagin, and wisely nopes right out of it (area 27).

They head west, noting that the paths don’t quite line up with the lizardfolks’ map. The triton confirms that other prisoners are being used to excavate and reform the entire complex, to make it more habitable for the sahuagin.

Mac sees some soft lights glowing from an open archway and looks inside.

A large, sprawling, oblong temple lies before him, with tiled pillars and a stone altar (area 37).

Embedded into the stone altar is a metallic, circular disc with an eyeball — the same device the party recalls was in the Wreck of the Golden Crown.

Patrolling the area is a high priestess and a large lobster-monster (a chuul).

In the middle of the temple, three priestess concentrate on an arcane ritual, surrounding a trapped lizardfolk in an magical bubble, lines of energy spreading around them.

Could this be the tribe’s lost queen?

The Zoo Crew agrees they need to fuck around and find out.

Mac unleashes an ambush arrow at the chuul, hoping to draw its attention out of the room.

The plan sort-of works. The chuul screams and charges, but the other sahuagin are all capable spellcasters.

The three priestesses in the middle must concentrate on their ritual, but they can all summon spiritual weapons as a bonus action.

The high priestess in the back can launch guiding bolts at a 120 ft range!

Torrel fires off an eldritch blast at a priest, knocking it backwards. It loses concentration, and cracks begin forming in the bubble.

The creature quickly swims back to its position to resume the spell. The party needs to stop them!

Savra casts gust of wind right out of the entryway. Though it knocks back the chuul and a priest, it also provides a fun jetstream for the party to use as they launch themselves into the room.

Screw the safe, defensive plan, we’re going in!

Torrel tries to swim to the ritual site and unleash a thunderwave spell, but the chuul grapples him in its pincers.

Gotwald embiggens and slices at the chuul with his anchor axe, and the chuul grapples him as well! The threesome would slug it out for the majority of the battle.

The rest of the party jet-streams forward as Torrel lays down a silence spell on the ritual site, easily interrupting the spellcasting, and confusing the sahuagin!

Pesky Torrel would maintain concentration on the silence for the entire battle (+7 to CON saves!).

call from the deep sahuagin stronghold temple

Mac tries to shoot at the magic eye thing, but misses twice. The party randomly groups up close near the ritual site, and the eye is able to target all four with a confusion spell, but only Mac is affected.

With the ritual stymied from the silence, the spell is broken. The globe breaks apart, and the lizard queen snaps her eyes open. And she’s super pissed!

She’s wearing a necklace of adaptation give by the sahuagin to keep her down here. The sahuagin have been using her primal power magic to sink the entire complex beneath the waves.

Savra rushes up to her, enveloping her in her always-on cube of force, and writes some explanations in her book (the silence spell prevents communication!).

The Queen is clever and picks up on the situation relatively quickly. She nods at Savra, turns to the high priestess, and charges.

Her and the priestess go 1v1 for two rounds, casting spells and slicing at each other with melee attacks while the rest of the party mops up the other enemies.

Borgas scores two kills, while Gotwald puts down the nasty chuul. Poor Kysh can’t hit the broadside of a barn for almost the entire fight.

Savra fires a chromatic orb at the high priestess while her zombies tear into her.

The Queen finishes her off with a savage neck twist, and the room lay silent. Well, technically less silent after Torrel finally turns off the silence spell!

The lizard Queen is eager to destroy the sahuagin, but is smart enough to know they’re deep in enemy territory, and the party is looking much worse for wear.

They agree they need to get to the top level, rescue any air-breathing prisoners, and get out, as the entire complex is beginning to buzz with activity, and undoubtedly have started discovering the destruction left in the party’s wake.
