Following the battle at the temple, the party hunkers down for a quick short rest.
Queen Othokent goes into a trance, and afterwards claims to have contacted her people through some spiritual magic. She wants revenge against the sahuagin conquerors more than anyone, but she’s no fool. The party needs to escape and regroup before they can mount any kind of counter-attack.
After the short rest, they realize Mac is gone. Borgas says he left to find Master Sliver. Curse his impetuousness!
The remaining party (plus their three NPCs!), make their way south towards the only stairs leading to the top floor.
When they turn a corner, a small patrol spots them and attacks! The patrol consists of two sahuagin, a coral smasher, and a shell shark.
The coral smasher closes in while another sahuagin retreats to sound the alarm.
Torrel throws down the hunger of hadar, eliminating one sahuagin and forcing the shark to take the long way around.
The rest of the party deals with the coral smasher, including Gotwald grabbing and tossing him into the hungering void.
By the time the shark makes it around, Savra throws her zombies at it, and the rest continue swimming toward the stairs.
They can hear screams of the sahuagin in the distance. Time is definitely not on their side!
When they ascend the stairs, they finally emerge above the water line — for the first time in four sessions they are no longer underwater!
Unfortunately the room is anything but empty. They emerge into a construction zone (area 19) with a chain-gang of shackled prisoners excavating a wall with pickaxes and shovels, while a few sahuagin watch them.
The sahuagin are already on high alert, however (Mac just came through recently!) and launch into an attack with the party.
The enemies consist of two sahuagin, one coral smasher, and one champion.

The battle is over relatively quickly, though the champion proves a nasty foe with his multi-attack, and Gotwald is forced to activate both his runes, and still ends up bleeding profusely.
The prisoners confirm that Mac came through recently in a rush. They also explain how they’ve recently cleared a path along the western side of the dungeon, leading straight to the entrance, with nary a guard in sight.
Nice!
Unfortunately, the hordes of sahuagin are now closing in from below. It’s time to run!
For this next sequence, I created a chase and a custom complications table, which a random player rolled each round.
The party had to make it five rounds to reach the end of the chase, near the dungeon entrance (area 2).
Every round they had to make an Athletics check to run, or some other action, to stay ahead of the horde and avoid any ranged spear attacks.
Beginning with round three, they also had to make CON saves to avoid exhaustion!
Savra had a clever idea to cast gust of wind behind them, buying the party some extra time.
But racing at break-neck speed down dark hallways and corridors can prove challenging, and quite painful. Gotwald nearly went down after crashing into a sharp 90-degree turn!
Thankfully the party’s high AC defused much of the sahuagin’s attack, but they still ended the chase quite battered and slightly exhausted.
The party, plus over a dozen prisoners, spill out of the hallway and into a guard post with a bronze gate set into the north wall. They see Mac arrive from another hallway on the other side with what looks like a wererat in tow.
They’re almost out, but the horde is right behind them.
