After the tense chase sequence down dark, twisting hallways with the sahuagin horde nipping at their heels, the party, the prisoners, and their allies spill out onto a final guard post (area 2). The room holds only a pair of sahuagin guards, but a large bronze gate blocks access to the entryway and the entrance (and exit) beyond.

Time is not on their side. They must escape before the horde reaches them, but a closed gate and several enemies blocking their path.

Gotwald’s embiggening expires as he shoves past the prisoners and NPCs to reach the gate. He’s exhausted from running, and feels more confident operating the nearby gate winch and pully then trying to smash it down.

He begins cranking it up, and calls to Borgas to help him. 

As the NPCs spill into the guard post room, Torrel starts blasting the nearby sahuagin. Savra whips out her driftglobe for light, and keeps her gust of wind spraying down the hallway, keeping the horde at distance, while dodging their thrown spears.

Meanwhile, Mac and his recently rescued mentor Master Sliver have also reached the guard post, from the opposite hallway. He dumps some ball bearings behind him, commands his drake Cheese to stand guard, and he and Sliver advance on the other sahuagin.

The party soon gets the gate raised, though Gotwald takes several spears from the sahuagin waiting in the room beyond (area 1), and nearly goes down.

The lizard queen heals him with cure wounds, chastising him the whole time.

Mac and Sliver prove instrumental in taking down the remaining sahuagin guards. It’s a good thing, as Savra loses concentration on gust of wind, and the horde begins spilling out of the corridor.

The NPCs all hurry to the entryway while Gotwald, embiggened once again, holds the gate up for safety.

The entrance doors explode inward as several lizardfolk step through, led by Vyth. They’ve heard the call of their queen, and they’re here to help!

Sunlight streams in from outside, and the party can see their ship nearby, blasting sahuagin with its mounted ballista.

Vyth calls from them to hurry while the lizardfolk and ship crew cover their escape.

But the front of the horde reaches Gotwald before he can leave. Four sahuagin attack him, including one champion and a coral smasher, for a total of nine attacks (with blood frenzy/advantage!). Thanks to Gotwald’s Hill Rune (which grants resistance) he somehow survives with only a few hit points remaining!

He weakly stumbles forward. Mac shoots an arrow at a nearby sahuagin, killing it instantly. Its body falls on top of a lever and the gate comes crashing down. Savra follows up with mage hand to snap the lever off.

The sahuagin horde is momentarily stymied, though not for long. The party and all the NPCs swiftly rush outside and swim toward their ship while patrols harry them from all around.

But without the supernatural aid of their mind flayer masters (severed by the players during the temple battle), the sahuagin are far more disorganized and disoriented. Our heroes are able to escape to Thornhold, and finally breathe a sigh of relief.

With Queen Othokent’s return, she’s able to establish a formal alliance between her people and Thornhold, and get them out of the dangerous swamp. With much of the lizardfolk’s treasures still sunken in the lair, she rewards them with the necklace of adaptation the sahuagin had forced on her, which Gotwald accepts.

Harley is overjoyed to reunite with Kysh. The tritons want to report back to Gillian about the wider threat behind the sahuagin’s strength, but so far their mission aligns with the party’s. They’ll remain with the ship for now.

Master Sliver and the prisoners from Neverwinter are eager to return home, but they can stay in Thornhold for now, and take a caravan back north. Nobody is eager for anymore sea travel any time soon!

Master Sliver is impressed with Mac’s prowess in battle, and encourages him to take on Borgas as an apprentice, just as he did with Mac.

Borgas once again proved a mighty ally in the final battle. He truly discovered his worth when the party rescued him. He readily accepts the invitation to join their NPC crew. He knows nothing of boats, but he’s eager, confident, and a damn fine spear at their side.
