The party may have unleashed a juvenile kraken upon the world, but they at least defeated a mind flayer, and a high-ranking leader under the mysterious Zellix’Phor. The Kraken Society has been dealt a serious blow, and The Styes is a slightly safer place.

But it’s still no place to truly rest and recuperate.

The party recalls the islands of Mintarn as a safe haven for all sorts — neutral ground for pirate and navy alike in the Sea of Swords.

They leave the desolation of Orlumbor and arrive in Mintarn, a much cleaner, nicer island city under the protection of an ancient red dragon, whose constant tithing demands puts him at the top of the city’s flowing economy.

The party arrives at the Keelhaul, the go-to tavern for new arrivals, and immediately see Captain Callous, the gregarious tiefling.

Callous shoos his companions away and waves the party over, greeting them as old friends — friends that still owe him money!

Callous’ aid had been purchased right before the battle of Neverwinter, and the second half of the debt was due.

Surprisingly, the party pay the remaining 175gp without a fuss. But when Callous offers important intel on Captain Tentrix and his Pirate Lords, they negotiate, explaining that they can wipe out Tentrix and his pirates, and free the sea of the tyrannical Black Armada.

Callous finally relents, sharing the dossiers on the five pirate lords:

  • Captain Dhurge: a four-armed sahuagin with a love of magic wands.
  • Desecratus Profanis: a scheming spirit naga who hails from Chult.
  • The Storm Maiden: an ambitious rocklander, said to have be blessed by Umberlee herself.
  • Jarl Bluebeard: a half-crazed frost giant loyal to Tentrix.
  • Captain Scummer: a slaad pirate whose cruelty is matched only by his fashion sense.

Upon mention of Scummer, a man stands up in the bar and transforms into the coifed slaad, launching a fireball at the party’s table, while several patrons unsheathe weapons. It’s an ambush!

call from the deep mintarn battle

Callous is shocked that even the Black Armada would fight in such neutral ground, but the party has little to do but defend themselves against a dozen fanatical pirates — including a half-ogre and a wereshark!

After suffering from the fireball, the party is in no mood to play nice. Savra unleashes a devastating new spell, Gravity Pull, in the middle of the tavern, damaging all the pirates and killing several patrons.

Callous, who had been fighting with the party, is shocked again at the wanton display of destruction and murder, claiming they’re no better than the Armada. He angrily tosses out the second piece of information — locations of sites the Black Armada is plundering, and says any future business dealings they might have are now null and void.

Then he disappears.

Gotwald embiggens, Torrel summons his tentacle, and Mac summons Cheese as they all fight back against the pirates (mostly thugs and spies).

Gotwald becomes a pincushion against relentless attacks (at one point saving against wereshark lycanthropy), while Mac keeps his eyes trained on the frog-like slaad captain, firing poison arrows.

After a round of hurling flame, Captain Scummer sees half his forces already dead or dying. He pulls out a poison arrows, coughs, and turns invisible, fleeing out the back door.

Mac tries to follow, but the crafty slaad captain has disappeared.

The others quickly clean up the brawl — by making a huge bloody mess of all the attackers.

The anxious minotaur bartender admits that the Armada threatened his family in order to stage this attack, and the party blame this destruction on him. He flees, and they’re left to return to their ship.

Callous’ second intel points out two locations on their map: Ironhand Cairn, and Narino. Both are located between Mintarn and the Nelanthers, where Tentrix lairs. The party may find treasure, a Black Armada captain, or both!
