Ten years ago, the Ghoul Imperium of the Underworld and the vampires of Morgau marched into Krakova and conquered the kingdom entirely, establishing the Greater Duchy of Morgau and expanding the borders of the Blood Kingdom.

The undead occupation has been kept in check by resistance from the Court-in-Exile, as well as opportunistic reaver dwarves who sailed across the Nieder Straits.

But the hidden machinations of the ghouls swirl beneath the surface. Rumors abound of an even more sinister plot that threatens not just one kingdom, but the entire world of Midgard.

Empire of the Ghouls is designed by Richard Green, and published by Kobold Press. It takes place in Kobold Press’ fantasy world of Midgard.

Chapter 5: Into the Fuligin Realm
Episode 6: The Dragon Graveyard p1

Active Party:
Bahn, level 11 kobold Bard College of Whispers
I/O, level 11 gearforged Circle of the Moon Druid
Ry, level 11 shadow fey Black Powder Sorcerer
Zaberi, level 11 human Battle Master Fighter/Wizard

After a long rest in Narosain’s bug-infested sanctum, the party traveled east and north per his directions, heading toward the Dragon Graveyard, and his lost staff.

Their darakhul disguises continue to serve them well as they travel past the docks of the Sulphur Sea and beyond a tunnel leading to the ghoul town of Fretlock.

Turning north, a small, poorly mainted bridge spans a yellow river that feeds into the Sulphur Sea, where a single bored ghoul resides.

A sign nearby reads: Warning: Dragon Graveyard. Extremely dangerous.

Note: The first 20-or so minutes of this session was not recorded. Oops! Recording starts when the party is outside the Dragon Graveyard.

The party move confidently, stopping only when the ghoul steps out. He introduces himself as Slathers, an eccentric, lonely ghoul given guard duty in a remote, isolated post. He’s not really there to stop people, but to warn them of the dangers ahead.

The Dragon Graveyard was once home to many cave dragons, but now only a single one remains after the Imperium moved in and slaughtered them on their way to conquer Krakova a decade ago.

And now he’s bigger, and pissed off. The cave dragon Gondecap has also attracted a loyal following of kobolds, and whatever else dwells in dark caves.

But the party has business here, so they smile politely and move on.

They find mounted ghoul heads on pikes outside the graveyard site. The graveyard itself is far wilder than they’re used to. Stalagmites and stalactites make it difficult to see, even with their faux-darkahul darkvision.

They decide some scouting is in order. I/O shifts into her earth elemental form to glide underground, while Zaberi summons a lizard familiar to see through its eyes.

The reconnaissance spots a large cave drake nestled nearby with a small pile of coins and bones. Not quite a cave dragon, but certainly dangerous. North of that is a robed kobold wizard, but the kobold spots the lizard and blasts it with a firebolt, severing the connection.

The party deliberates on whether to sneak past the enemies or meet them head on. Ultimately they decide it’s better to fight their way in rather than leave any to come at them from behind.

I/O bursts up from the ground to grapple the cave drake, but when the rest of the party squeezes through the tunnels, they hit a tripwire that the tiny lizard never found, sending a hidden bronze bell crashing to the ground!

The party is forced to battle the drake, as well as several alerted kobolds who flit and in and out of tunnels to hurl traps and shoot poisoned crossbow bolts.

When Bahn flanks around a different tunnel, he sets off a second bell trap, and wakes up a second cave drake! He summons a defensive construct to keep it at bay, while Zaberi and I/O awkwardly maneuver through the tight corners to take up melee positions.

Ry sees the kobold wizard on the other side of the wall hanging back but preparing for a fight, and he decides to attack her straight on. When she attempts to cast hold person in response, he shunts away to the shadow realm, leaving him oblivious to the danger he unleashed.

Alerted by the kobolds, the bones of a dragon knit together, forming a nasty graveyard dragon! It unleashes a devastating fire breath attack (59 damage), dropping Zaberi down to 1 hit point.

Then a crossbow bolt from a kobold puts her down!

Then gets real tense when she rolls a 1 on her first death save, prompting I/O to shift back and cast mass cure wounds.

Through teamwork and perseverance, the party is able to defeat the two cave drakes, graveyard dragon, and kobold wizard.

The other kobolds slink away deeper into the caves, leaving the party a moment to catch their breaths. They too decide to slink away, back out of the graveyard to grab a quick short rest before heading in.

And perhaps watching for traps this time.
