Following the large-scale ship battle with the Chultan naga pirate, the party finally get clear skies, a long rest, and a level up.

With most of the Black Armada Pirate Lords slain, the party has only one destination left: the floating fortress of Sea King Tentrix, located somewhere in the Nelanther Isles. And the magic compasses they’ve been finding on the Pirate Lords all point toward the middle of the perilous archipelago.

The so-called Pirate Isles feature hundreds of islands, rough waters, sheer cliffs, ship-tearing coral, and very little civilization. They’re a haven for, well, pirates!

It’s all hands on deck as crashing waves threaten to capsize the ship as they sail deeper into the islands, following the compasses.

Mac says goodbye to Sharky, who refuses to enter the maelstrom. Gotwald takes the wheel of the ship. Savra uses her spells to help guide them, including dancing lights to light their path, while Torrel delivers a hilariously foreboding sermon about meeting the fathomless.

The ship takes some damage, but they finally make it to their destination: a floating ship graveyard-turned-fortress. Surrounding the lair is a ring of wrecks that form 50-ft tall outcroppings, surrounding the fortress like castle walls and ramparts, with bridges spanning between them.

Only a single entrance is large enough for a ship, which the party quickly identifies as the “killzone.”

Call from the Deep Nelanther isles

Not wanting to waltz into an obvious trap, the party pull out their folding boat to scout around. There’s no good place to anchor the ship however, with the raging waters and constant threat of cliffs and coral, but their crew promises to do their best.

Hopping into the smaller boat, the party carefully, and stealthily, navigates toward the right-most cliff of Driftwood Docks. The flying cheese can help anchor a rope, while Savra and Mac can simply scale the cliff with their climb speeds and magic items.

Mac throws on pass without trace, just to be safe.

They ascend the 50-ft cliff’s edge to find a large group of pirates ready to defend their post against incoming ships. All eyes are trained on the party’s ship just a 100-ish ft away.

In fact, every rocky island is a battle station of thugs, ballista, war drums, and the occasional minotaur or ogre.

After the party slowly exhales, they agree that Savra’s gravity sinkhole spell would do quite nicely here. She aims the AoE just off the edge of the cliff, pulling half the enemy into the air. If they don’t die from the force damage, the 50-ft drop finishes them off!

The survivors and surrounding guards start looking around for where the hell that came from. A nearby minotaur rolls a nat 20 on Perception, spotting the party and bellowing the danger.

Roll for initiative!

The gladiator mini-boss rushes up and knocks Mac off the cliff, sending him tumbling below. Gotwald responds by hoisting onto the island and doing what he does best — bodily shoving people around! He knocks several more enemies off, including the gladiator.

Savra unleashes another gravity sinkhole on a nearby island, decimating the guards and preventing another ballista from firing.

But there are multiple islands, multiple guard posts, and multiple ballistae. And one group fires a nasty shot right into the hull of the ship.

The crew is doing their best, but with no safe harbor around, their ship is inexorably heading toward the chokepoint.

Then a large, bellowing laugh rings out from near a half-ruined tower on a nearby island, ready for a battle. The party still has one Pirate Lord they’ve yet to encounter….
