After sneaking onto one of the towering battlements and unleashing several gravity sinkholes to disrupt and destroy the guards, the battle of Driftwood Docks has truly begun.

Having been knocked off the cliff, Mac is forced to battle the pirate gladiator who was knocked down with him, taking two critical hits in three attacks, before using his ring of water walking to retreat and regroup.

Gotwald deflects the charge of an enemy minotaur, then pulls up the bridge stakes, sending the large creature tumbling into the churning waters below.

Borgas manages to hit with the magic speargun the party had given him, and impressively drags the ogre drummer off the cliff.

At this point Mac is getting annoyed that it’s raining monsters down there!

Savra has the critical job of constant AoE spell attacks to destroy the clusters of ballista emplacements and thug-guards, including more gravity sinkholes, and shatter.

Back on the ship, Torrel emerges in the middle of the warzone. He summons Bigby’s Hand Tentacle to wreck havoc on the pirate guards.

The ship is crawling through the chokepoint, and once the front passes through the cliffs, they get a glimpse of a bigger problem: Driftwood Docks’ leader, the frost giant Pirate Lord Jarl Frostbeard.

Frostbeard uses a magic bowl to summon a water elemental on the cliff with Gotwald and Savra. The elemental surges toward Savra and engulfs her. She makes the save, but as a result she’s pushed off the cliff, tumbling into the waters below.

Gotwald stuns the creature using his rune, and Savra climbs up the cliff and casts vortex warp, targeting the tip of a peak, and sending it crashing into the water below.

The party is quite effective at maximizing their environment!

call from the deep driftwood docks

Mac, who often separates from the party for his own shenanigans, climbs up a different cliff and fires arrows into the guards. The guards flee, and Mac turns the tables by grabbing their ballista and firing it at the nearby ogre (who had climbed back up the cliff), killing it with a big shot.

Frostbeard hurls a large boulder at their ship, tearing a hole into the hull. The ship has taken quite a beating between the churning waters, ballista hits, and flying rocks, sitting at around 30% hit points!

Torrel sends “Big T” to distract the giant, probably saving the poor ship as it continues past the last guards.

But it’s Savra who seals the deal by casting polymorph on Frostbeard, turning him into a chicken!

While Big T attacks the last ballista grouping, Savra teleports to the chicken with thunder step, and scoops it up, returning the following round with a final thunder step, and bringing the chicken-giant on board!

To get his loot? For questioning? Just because? We’ll find out next time!

Mac, using multiple casts of Ashardalon’s stride over several rounds, rushes along the right side of the cliffs, and leaps, finally getting back on the boat just as it leaves the docks and enters the harbor beyond.

The party is wounded, exhausted, but alive (and the same could be said of their poor ship). The harbor is dominated by a floating fortress-dock made of several ships lashed and stacked together: the lair of Sea King Tentrix.
