After several grueling sessions of battling through the entire Floating Fortress of the Black Armada, the party finally reaches Sea King Tentrix.
Mac, Torrel, and Gotwald reuinte on the second floor of the tavern, running directly into the slaad Pirate Lord, Captain Scummer.
Scummer had been slowed by a nearly depleted Savra, who is providing chaotic backup with her wand of wonder, and her and their NPC allies rush to join them.
Mac grabs the bulbous captain and points him outside, forcing the slowed captain to finish his fear spell on his fellow pirates! They both make the save, but the wasted turn lets the party beat up on him with many a punch, tentacle-slap, and eldritch blast, knocking him into the water below.
The scheming pirate lives, but his general disloyalty to Tentrix keeps him from re-engaging.
Gotwald bursts through the walls Kool-Aid man-style to take on Tentrix, as the party finally reaches his private ship quarters.
Tentrix calls to bring out the prisoner, prompting another kraken priest named Wulfgar to drag out their prize — Sanbalet!
The enemy-turned-ally of the party laments that he’d been captured and tortured, and forced to reveal information about them. But they hadn’t broken his spirit, and he was willing to fight with them.
Shockingly, it’s Savra the necromancer who saves Sanbalet, using her very last spell slot of vortex warp him to safety and untying his bonds.
True to his word, a grateful Sanbalet reveals the he’s a low-level sorcerer himself, and fires off some scorching rays at his former captor, as the party advances.
Tentrix screams out with the Voice of the Kraken, halting Gotwald’s advances. Several pirate minions wail on the minotaur fighter, but he easily shrugs them off. Tentrix soon summons tentacles to slow the rest of the party down.
Focusing on Tentrix, Gotwald activates one of his runes and puts the Sea King into a dreamy stupor, dispelling the tentacles. Argh!
Mac fires off a critical hit, and Gotwald breaks free to rush at Tentrix, who’s suddenly not feeling so confident as the minotaur snatches the marid conch, claiming the oddly friendly marid, who finishes off Wulfgar.
But it’s Savra’s wand of wonder that continues to make things interesting!
After firing a stream of gems at several pirates, injuring them and motivating them to snatch up the gems and flee, she points it at Tentrix, unleashing a nasty lightning bolt — which nearly downs Gotwald!
Tentrix is able to take out Gotwald himself with a Thunderous Touch attack. Just as Torrel and the others arrive to help, Savra uses her last charge, casting fireball on the ship!
The place is engulfed in flames, and Torrel nearly goes down as a result.
Meanwhile, the Marid floats over to Gotwald and presumes his command by putting out some of the flames and saving the unconscious fighter.
Torrel, barely clinging to life, fires off another eldritch blast, sending Tentrix slamming into the railing.
The party feels a great psychic presence crash down upon him, crushing his consciousness, then release. But this time, they “follow” the psychic emanation, seeing from whence it came: a purple-hued island near Gunderlun.
With Gotwald unconscious, the marid calls for someone else to grab the conch shell that binds him, and he repeats his bargain: if they promise to set him free, he will get them out of here.
It’s a good deal, as the entire lair is falling apart and sliding into the ocean. And closing the distance all around them are several Black Armada ships, including a very angry frost giant Pirate Lord.
Savra grabs the shell and the party gathers near as the marid weaves a powerful spell — sending them directly to that purple-hued island, and the heart of the Kraken Society.
