Previously on Call from the Deep

Starring:
Gotwald Ironhorn, level 11 minotaur Rune Knight Fighter
Mac, level 11 tortle Drakewarden Ranger/Rogue
Savra Akkedis, level 11 lizardfolk School of Necromancy Wizard
Torrel, level 11 kenku Fathomless Warlock Pact of the Amulet/Fighter

The crazed cultist did not like being interrupted from his dark ritual. He unleashed a whispering aura, leaking psychic damage around him (Mac really hates that!), and opened up a temporary void to batter and frighten the rest of the party.

But he was still one man. Gotwald hurled hammers, Mac slashed with his scimitar of speed, and Torrel blasted with eldritch force.

Ever the pragmatist, Savra used the recently murdered bodies to raise a pair of zombies.

Analyzing the writing revealed a dark ritual that would have summoned a powerful creature.

Moving on from the murder/ritual site, the party continued north toward the closest Augmenter brain.

They find a densely packed cavern of stalagmites and stalactites, with spiked ground that looks painful to fall on.

Gotwald is keeping his eyes on the ground, looking for mouth floors, but it doesn’t look like there are any.

Instead, the danger is in the stalagmites and stalactites!

A pair of ropers have been transformed and mutated by the mind flayers, into urophions. One is on the ground, the other hanging 50 ft off the ceiling above.

The one on the ground uses its new psychic powers to unleash a stunning mind blast, hitting nearly the entire party, while the ceiling roper grabs Mac and Gotwald with its tendrils and begins reeling them up.

Borgas shoots the tendril holding Mac, freeing him.

Savra, the only other party member to make the INT save against the stun, casts eyebite, targets, the ceiling monster, and knocks it unconscious!

The creature, and Gotwald, fall into the spiky ground below (which also wakes it back up). Gotwald takes a nasty bite from the creature, but now that it’s on the ground, it’s much easier to attack back! Despite getting restrained again, the minotaur fighter grapples the monster and grinds it into the spikes below.

After another unconscious-knock out from Savra, he enjoys a super-powered critical swing to destroy it.

Meanwhile the other urophion grabs Cheese and Borgas, and Torrel unleashes his own tentacle spell to attack it. But the creature again shows off new psychic abilities, and levitates above the black tentacles!

Call from the deep ascarle caverns

Mac fires a powerful arrow blast but it maintains concentration, while Gotwald works on severing the tendrils and freeing their allies.

Savra, still concentrating on eyebite, targets the second urophion, and sends this one tumbling to the ground — into Torrel’s tentacles! C-c-combo!

Needless to say, it doesn’t last too long after that.

As they get a quick short rest, the party is growing more paranoid, as death is coming at them from all directions.

The cavern opens up into the large chamber in the middle. A large hole in the ceiling leads to the ocean above, with the water held back by magical runes.

They make a note of it, but continue further north, where natural steps descend into a large pool of murky water.

Their paranoia serves them well. This time, Mac sends Cheese flying ahead. A successful perception check spots several large creatures swimming around in the waters below.

The party isn’t used to planning their own ambushes, but Mac and Gotwald drink some potions, and Savra points her wand of wonder, letting fate decide.

She casts darkness on the pool.

Nothing happens.

She slaps the wand a few times, points again, and casts… a cloud of oversized butterflies.

After a few moments, a pair of mutated chuuls with elongated tentacles and slimy mucus, uchuulons, rise from the water and begin eating the butterflies.

The party seizes the opportunity to attack, with Torrel starting things off by casting banishment on one of them, taking it right out of the fight.

Gotwald leaps into the water, making the CON save against the poison, and begins attacking the creature. He quickly realizes that the slimy mucus is poisonous to the touch, and paralytic. To a grapple-based fighter, this is a nightmare situation.

He responds by yeeting the large creature (with a nat 20 Athletics check!) out of the water and onto the shore, hilariously freaking out the entire party.

Savra casts telekinesis to grab the monster and hurl it into the air, where Torrel and Mac can finish it off with powerful range attacks from a safe distance. Another killer combo!

In the water, Gotwald spots a normal-looking brain floating in a jar near the bottom of the pool. The first Augmenter brain? We’ll find out next time!
