At first glance Hellbound Heists appears to be a collection of adventures for Baldur’s Gate: Descent Into Avernus, and their close release dates and obvious similar themes might suggest the tie-in. Hellbound Heists is actually far more encompassing when it comes to Hell, however, featuring one heist adventure for every single layer of hell – that’s nine adventures altogether.

Ghosts of Saltmarsh gave us an excellent reason to dive into a nautically-themed adventure. But every adventure, no matter how detailed, is going to need some encounters to fill those long sea voyages. “Saltmarsh Encounters” provides 60 Tier 1 (levels 1 – 4) encounters that fit perfectly within a sea-worthy campaign.

I’m not a big fan of guns in the real world, but in a fantasy setting I think they’re fun as hell. I’m often drawn to the sharpshooters and dual pistol-wielders in any game or world that offers it. In D&D, adding guns to the mix raises some obvious balance concerns.

Thankfully “Gungslinger Class Revised” does an excellent job creating a balanced new class based entirely around guns for levels 1-20, including seven archetypes and lots of fun trick shots to perform.

I’m familiar with Jack the Ripper but less so with the Gothic Earth RPG setting, which was apparently introduced to Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 2nd Edition in the mid 90s. Famous literary characters like Sherlock Holmes exist in this alternate period universe, as does magic and supernatural creatures.

Red Jack: A Gothic Earth Adventure” takes its major story cues and plot structure from a classic Holmes/Jack the Ripper murder mystery, distilled into a single D&D session for a new level 1 party.

That Sinking Feeling” stands out as one of the higher level adventures I’ve reviewed. Designed for a party of 9th level characters, it’s set in the port city of Murran, where the party offers to investigate a recent spat of mysterious shipwrecks. It’s a solid mini-adventure with multiple dungeons, though the plain layout (and grid maps) and minimal presentation are a major step backward.

Another new player class, and another attempt to remake the oft-lamented ranger. “The Slayer Class” adds a new hunter class that follows the typical route of combining fighter, ranger, and rogue into a single monster-hunting class. Including five subclasses is impressive, but they’re all a bit too short and simple.

As a film student in college, I took a whole class on Alfred Hitchock, and one of Hitchock’s biggest films was The Birds, where a New England town is seemingly taken over by murderous swarms of birds for no apparent reason, leading to one of the most stupefying Don’t Go In There moments in horror cinema history.

Down Came a Blackbird,” an adventure designed for 3rd level, clearly draws its inspiration from the infamous Hitchcock film, as the residents of the port town of Saltmarsh have become victims to the increasingly erratic and violent behavior of the local birds. Since this is D&D, it involves a sea hag’s obsession, a violent peryton, and a town in need of some heroes.

An Easter Egg Hunt is a time-honored seasonal tradition for many, but admittedly I’ve never seen it applied to a D&D adventure, until now.

Caverns of Slime” is one part county fair and one part ooze-themed dungeon crawl for levels 1-3. The PCs are invited to take part in a festival to gather magical eggs by helping NPCs, searching the town, participating in games, and exploring the nearby caverns, providing a solid balance of exploration, role-playing, and combat.
