Session 23

Starring
Cere, level 9 dwarf Cleric Domain of Light
Darryl, level 9 human Berserker Barbarian
Kazra, level 9 human Champion Fighter/Paladin Oath of Devotion
Py, level 9 gnome Hunter Ranger
and special guest…!

After resting, the party heads back out into the city, this time heading south toward the occupied mansion.

As they reach a bridge that spans a dried river below, a mysterious old man asks for help clearing the path of soldiers.

The Dragon Army appears to be repairing the crumbling bridge’s foundation, with plenty of soldiers and draconians overseeing the work.

The party are eager to take out a few bad guys, and readily agree, beginning with Py launching a conjured barrage as the party charges up to the bridge.

The old man, Sovats, appears to be a wizard of some kind. He conjures up a short wall of fire (actually a major image illusion!), funneling the soldiers along the edge of the bridge — perfect for an enraged Darryl to begin yeeting them off!

When the first draconian falls dead and disintegrates into ashes, however, the old man is upset. He tries snorting the ashes, and claims he’s very hungry. It’s only then the party realizes who they’re dealing with, Hungry, the friendly yet psychotic death slaad (played this session by special guest, Chris)!

Darryl realizes the wall of fire is only an illusion, as do the soldiers, but that barely slows down the slaughter of steel and arrows.

Soon the final few soldiers turn tail and run, but Py is easily able to cut them down with his longbow.

The party promises Hungry there will be plenty of draconians to snack on where they’re going.

They approach the occupied, two-story mansion, noting the patrol of soldiers, and the guarding draconians at each entrance. Must be an important location!

After some deliberation on how to approach, including via roof or disguise, the party let Hungry conjure a monstrous image to distract the patrol and guards, then rush over to the northern entrance.

Unfortunately the occupied mansion is indeed heavily occupied by soldiers within. The first floor is almost entirely a mess hall!

The area quickly breaks into a large-scale combat encounter, with Hungry dropping a cloudkill spell on the southern end, and Py, Kazra, and Darryl all charging forward with melee attacks.

Cere casts arcane eye to scout other rooms, including a kitchen with a worried goblin, and upstairs, where she spots several more soldiers alerted to battle.

The rest of them barely make a sweat as they cleave through enemies, even when the distracted patrol from outside comes charging back to the doorway, prompting Cere to call for Hungry to take care of them!

Kazra handles an entire barracks of newly wakened soldiers, while Cere and Darryl head upstairs, meeting the boss of the area, Captain Haask, an aurak draconian.

The poor Captain barely has time to exhale his poisonous breath — not realizing Darryl is immune (thanks to a magic item) and Cere is resistant (as a dwarf).

The gold draconian is nearly cut down before muttering that this fort is lost, and teleports to safety.

With the last of the soldiers defeated, and Hungry mostly satiated (he would’ve loved a piece of the Captain, though!), the party helps themselves to some nice loot and critical intel — including the keys they need to the teleporter that leads to the floating island in the center.

Next up: The Threshold of the Heavens!
