Upon opening the door into a magically heated sauna with a pair of water elementals (Area 19), Mac reacts first, quickly shuts the door, and nopes back to the rest of the party. Thankfully the elementals don’t follow.
Savra dons elven chain from the treasure vault, and gives the trident of warning to Borgas, who is up to three attuned items by now!
After briefly checking the southwest corridor (Area 28) and noting the staircase (“it’s an up-staircase, right?”, Area 30), the party re-checks the brainscan device. It locates the next augmenter brain about 330 feet directly southeast.
Not wanting to tangle with the water elementals, the party opts to explore the northern room, where a deep, ominous fissure cuts a jagged line through the wall toward the east (Area 22).
After a short rest, Gotwald and Torrel take off first, swimming above the fissure. They begin to hear maddening whispers and frightening noises, and a frightened Gotwald is driven toward the nearest exit, where the fissure cuts through an old elven crypt (Area 14). Totally safe!
Nah it’s full of mutated water-zombies. Eight of ’em!
Gotwald swims headfirst down the corridor to tangle with the undead as they swarm him. Torrel backs him up with hunger of Hadar, covering most of the corridor near Gotwald, and giving the minotaur a fun combo when he constantly grapples and shoves the zombies into the tentacle void.
Despite an individual zombie’s relative weak attacks, and Gotwald’s impressive 21 AC, these zombies have it out for him, striking several times, including crits!
By the time Mac and Savra show up, Gotwald ducks out of the way, and Savra unleashes a lightning bolt from the Staff of the Magi, utterly destroying the injured zombies.
Meanwhile Torrel wasn’t content to watch Gotwald bash zombies, and kept swimming along the fissure, easily making the WIS save from the frightening whispers.
He arrives at the end of the fissure’s path, into an empty, seaweed-covered room (Area 2). At the same time, the terrible psychic presence of the augmented Elder Brain descends upon them. But this time, Zellix’Phor sounds pained, and stuttering to get words across. Destroying the augmenter brains is having a clear effect.
The conversation is directed towards another, called Shava, regent of the dungeon. The brain warns her that the meddlesome adventurers are entering her domain, and she should take them down. Alive if possible (for their sweet, sweet brains), dead if necessary.
Torrel listens at the door, and eventually hears another door opening. He carefully opens it, and finds a sahuagin baron, several merrow, and a sahuagin war priestess heading into the adjoining room, ready to defend their territory (Area 1)!
Torrel quickly casts Bigby’s hand, using it as a burly shield to block them from advancing.
Meanwhile, Gotwald swims through the dead zombies into an eastern corridor, which features some still-intact coffins. He opens one, unleashing a banshee wail! The unlucky fighter fails the DC 13 CON save, reducing him to zero hit points!
Savra begrudgingly revives him with a potion.
In the open crypt, he discovers an emergency bag filled with potions and scrolls. He quickly, and hilariously, drinks all the potions, bringing him up to half health.
As Gotwald and Savra carefully open the other two crypts, finding more treasures, Mac swims to catch up with Torrel.
He sees Torrel become paralyzed from a hold person spell, the hand fade away, and the brutal attacks of the monstrous mer-creatures that nearly drop him. Torrel is mostly saved with his adamantine armor, which makes him immune to critical hits. One of the merrow pulls him with their harpoons and grabs him, ready to drag the nearly-dead Torrel deeper into their lair.
Thinking carefully, Mac drinks a potion of speed and swims into the middle of them. He wrestles the paralyzed kenku from the merrow and hightails it out of there, back across the fissure.
At the same time, Gotwald, Savra, and Borgas have cleared the crypts and found a door at the eastern end. They open it and inadvertently flank the enemies that had been attacking Torrel!
The chaotic fight will continue next session…
