Ten years ago, the Ghoul Imperium of the Underworld and the vampires of Morgau marched into Krakova and conquered the kingdom entirely, establishing the Greater Duchy of Morgau and expanding the borders of the Blood Kingdom.

The undead occupation has been kept in check by resistance from the Court-in-Exile, as well as opportunistic reaver dwarves who sailed across the Nieder Straits.

But the hidden machinations of the ghouls swirl beneath the surface. Rumors abound of an even more sinister plot that threatens not just one kingdom, but the entire world of Midgard.

Empire of the Ghouls is designed by Richard Green, and published by Kobold Press. It takes place in Kobold Press’ fantasy world of Midgard.

As Grymork, leaves the party, Bahn returns from tying up the boat, grumbling about being left behind. As the kobold ascends the mountainous island trail to catch up, a dwarf wizard materializes out of the rocks.

Davros introduces himself as an old wizard whose latest teleportation spell as gone awry, and now finds himself in one of the most dangerous regions in the world. Thankfully, he’s up to the challenge!

Bahn and Davros follow the trail of bodies to the Shrine door, where they meet the others.

The door reveals a large temple-like cavern, with a blood-stained altar, looming stone statue, and otherwordly darkness and mists emerging from a pit. A ghoulish priest screams about the blood of the Krakovan noble ushering in a powerful avatar of Vardesain.

Roll for initiative!

The priest sends her ghoul lackeys to attack, followed by more undead temple servants nearby. Alaric tries to cast silence, but a paralyzing claw interrupts the spell.

While Millie takes on several guards, Zaberi rushes the priestess.

Then the avatar shows up.

A massive, mutated purple worm emerges from a planar portal within the mists, sporting wriggling tendrils and an unending appetite — Hriggala!

Zaberi rushes the priestess only to get magically banished into the realm of Evermaw, where Hriggala is currently emerging through the portal!

Millie rushes to the priestess, but is unable to break her concentration. Things get even worse when Bahn is paralyzed, and Millie is swallowed by the demon worm!

Davros turns everything around when he casts earth wave, creating an avalanche of rocks that trample over most of the minions, leaving many buried in the earth.

Fending off corpse worms in Evermaw, Zaberi rushes up the large worm, Dune-style, to return to the temple.

Before Millie loses coconscious within the worm’s stomach acid, she activates her immovable rod, forcing the avatar to remain trapped between worlds!

Bahn, desperate to save Millie, taunts the worm into swallowing him next, then reaches out for Millie and casts dimension door, just before he suffers a similar fate!

Davros continues to keep the enemies trampled and buried while the others slowly rally and fight back, finally defeating the priestess, and forcing the demon worm to retreat back to its plane.

With her dying words, the priestess mocks the party’s victory, claiming that the avatar was but a taste of things to come, and the Krakovan’s blood will be used for far more.

The party is already on a rescue mission for Archduke Avgost, and this ritual further galvanizes their quest.

The closing of the portal revels a nearby secret door, where they help themselves to a horde of tasty loot — including a sun blade!

With the shrine cleared, the party desperately pause for a long rest, before continuing on to the ghoul city, and hopefully, the Archduke, before it’s too late.
