Vestress leads the party out of the submerged ruins, returning to the massive cavern where the deep water ocean is held back by magical runes. Large metallic domes rise from the ground, built by the Colony of Zellix’Phor, and their final Augmenter Brain is located in one of them.
The alhoon can easily open the quallith doors, but otherwise concentrates on masking their minds and thoughts from the Colony.
In the entrance atrium, the party battles a pair of enthralled sahuagin barons, each wearing mind carapace armor and wielding mind blades. Gotwald easily shuts one down with his rune, while the other is peppered by blasts from Torrel and arrows from Mac.
Several doors line the circular walls, leading to either side of the oddly-shaped domes. Their brain-scan device reveals the final brain on the right side, and they head east and north, through winding tunnels and hallways of pipes and ventilation shafts.
The party is bewildered at the mechanical construction. Their previous dealings with the mind flayers have been much more organic. Vestress guesses it’s the work of Luzgrigaul, one of Zellix’phor’s primary attendants, and a skilled engineer.
Though a doorway they run into a pair of burly mutant humanoids (trolls) and a mind flayer working on the pipes. Savra sends a fireball streaming into the room, and the party quickly learns that the volatile pipes spray grease, smoke, and other nasty effects when disturbed!
The badly burned trolls are easy pickings for the party, but the mind flayer escapes to rally allies deeper in the complex, including a massive mutant twice the size of the others (dire troll).
The mind flayer uses its mind blast on the entire party, but is quickly cut down, making room for the beast as it roars into the room.
The giant mutant eviscerates Mac and Gotwald as they trade off tanking duties. The party tries to keep it in the doorway, instead of the dangerous pipe room. Gotwald even rips off a section of pipe and sprays the explosive gas into the mutant’s face!
A second mind flayer tries to charm and dominate Savra but she resists. She throws an ice storm into the next room, which holds several creatures in magical crystalline cubes. Though a follow-up wand of wonder only grows some soft grass!
The monstrous mutant finally goes down from repeated blasts from Torrel, and Gotwald breaks the mind flayer’s face with his fist.
With the area secure, the wounded party takes stock of the four creatures in suspended animation. Some are humanoid, others are more monstrous.
One of them looks like a very famous adventurer who had previous dealings with the Kraken Society….
