Our heroes arrive in the charming village village of Vogler. Vogler lies on the northeastern frontier of Solamnia, where the Vingaard River meets the sea. The only path lies north through a dense forest, while travel across the river is done by ropes and ferries across an unfinished bridge.
Despite its relatively rugged location, the people are friendly and welcoming to our new arrivals.
Beloved adventurer Ispin Greenshield, who had retired in Vogler, has recently past, leaving his comrade Becklin, a Knight of Solamnia to send out invitations to his funeral.
Becklin also retired in Vogler, becoming the town’s Castellan of Thornwall Keep, and helping to mend the image of the Knights of Solamnia. She’s also taken along an eager squire, Darrett Hightower.
Of our heroic arrivals, Elyas is merely returning home. He grew up in Vogler with his family and helps run their store. He’s good friends with Darrett, though Elyas’ talents with magic has recently put a wedge between he and the hopeful knight.
Elyas knows Becklin, and helps introduce the rest of the arrivals.
Ellowyn has met Becklin once before, and even performed at the Brass Crab, the local inn. The others are all fresh-faced to Vogler, though Korl is no stranger to boasting about himself to total strangers.
Becklin thanks them for the journey, and the group chats for some time before the funeral later that evening.
A few dozen townsfolk arrive at the wharf just outside the Brass Crab, including Mayor Raven, who says a few words, and spoiled young noble Bakaris, whose drunken belligerence puts him at odds with Elyas.
Everyone has a chance to say a few words at the funeral. Ellowyn in particular found Ispin a huge inspiration for her career as a traveling bard, and Becklin encourages her to play a song for them.
Two newcomers are also at the funeral. Cudgel is a dwarven warrior and former traveling companion to Becklin and Ispin. Like the party, she’s also here to pay her respects. Instead of retiring, however, she’s now the leader of her own mercenary company, the Ironclad Regiment, who have set up camp just outside town.
She’s looking forward to participating in the Battle of High Hill reenactment tomorrow during the Kingfisher Festival.
The other new face is a mysterious, blue-skinned elven woman. Elyas and Ellowyn try to speak with her, but she’s evasive and strange, speaking only of loss during her long life.
She warns them that danger is coming, and they will have an important part to play. Then she disappears through a nearby wall!
The next day, Becklin invites them to Thornwall Keep, where she presents Ispin’s magical +1 green shield. She offers it to the party if they agree to participate in the upcoming reenactment of the Battle of High Hill, a celebration of the town’s founding.
The shield is too small for Kazra, but Py is drooling all over it. The gnome ranger worships Ispin as a heroic celebrity, and accepts the shield with reverence.
Becklin explains that the battle is a fun exercise for the townsfolk, and represents the climax of the annual Kingfisher Festival later that day. This year will be different, as Cudgel’s mercenary company is playing the part of the villainous Istarian forces, allowing the full militia to battle on the same side.
Before the battle, the party enjoys the festival. Elyas helps work his family stall selling goods, while Kazra, Py, and Korl are eager to try the fishing competition.
Kazra has heart, but no fishing talent. Korl keeps up with Mayor Raven, but it’s Py that astonishes everyone, reeling up the infamous man-sized carp of the river, Benebog! Everyone cheers, and sees why the gnome is now carrying the famous green shield.
Soon it’s time for the parade. Everyone gathers at the Village Circle with their armor, and the Mayor passes out padded spears for safety. They march about half an hour out of the northern gate, arriving at a large hill.
The Ironclad Regiment is already lined up. Their armor is much more impressive, and they even have a few warhorses, though Cudgel offers a friendly wave.
Mayor Raven and the other spectators take up a nearby position. She reminds everyone that this is a friendly mock battle, and to make it entertaining! She blows a horn, and the two sides charge.
Laughter and shouting are soon replaced with anguished cries and screaming. A burly half-ogre buries an axe into Cudgel’s back. Everyone notices too late that many of the mercenaries are wielding real steel, and cutting through the poor militia. The mock battle has suddenly become very real!
Next up: Betrayal at High Hill!
