Session 2
Starring
Cere Underbough, level 2 dwarf cleric
Ellowyn Kent, level 2 kender bard
Kazra Shieldbinder, level 2 human fighter
Korl Flatstone, level 2 dwarf bard
Py, level 2 gnome ranger
Militia are being slaughtered around them, but the party has problems of their own, as three armed mercenaries barrel down on them on trained warhorses.
Kazra’s warhammer proves effective at knocking them off, as does Py’s fancy new magic shield.
Cere rushes to the downed Cudgel, noting that the merc leader is still alive. She prays to Reorx, channeling restorative magic into the Cudgel, and bringing her back to consciousness.
Cudgel doesn’t have time to be astonished. The leader of this betrayal has emerged from the fray — Gragonis, a towering half-ogre wielding a battle axe, flanked by several more loyal mercenaries/
She picks up a fallen sword and rushes toward him.
Cere isn’t the only one with newfound godly powers. Korl and Ellowyn unleash vicious mockery, bane, and dissonant whispers, bombarding their enemies in psychic malaise. They use their inspiring words to keep Kazra’s streak going, even as the warrior befriends one of the enemy warhorses (nat 20 Animal Handling!)
Cudgel faces off against her former lieutenant, and unlike the party, she’s not using non-lethal attacks. This betrayal is a stain on her reputation, and the wanton slaughter of village militia who were in no way prepared to face a real battle.
Despite her weakened state, Cudgel holds her own. The bard’s debuffs and psychic attacks wear down the enemy, until Gragonis is forced to flee back into the fray — where he takes an arrow into this skull.
The few surviving mercenaries scatter as Becklin charges through, wearing her full Solamnic plate armor, followed by an injured Mayor Raven wielding a sword.
They thank the party, and ask everyone to help tend to wounded and get back to the village.
They’ll have to bury their dead another day.
Back in Vogler, Mayor Raven quells an anxious crowd about the attack, while Becklin and the party arrive at the Brass Crab. Many of the wounded are taken to the Mayor’s house, while Cudgel, whose fading adrenaline leaves her unconscious, is taken to the Brass Crab, as Becklin fears for her safety.
They have several prisoners, including one merc who surrendered at the end.
Korl takes the lead in the interrogation, with help from Ellowyn who’s eager to capture his story. They learn that Gragonis mysteriously disappeared from the camp one night, returning with a cart-full of gold and a plan to destroy the militia and raid the village.
He hired his most loyal crew for the job, and they even killed some of their own in the surprise attack.
One they didn’t kill was Jeyev, the other lieutenant of the Ironclad Regiment. The prisoner admits that Jeyev is “a bit of a dick,” but he’s loyal to Cudgel. He’s more a ranger and scout than a warrior, and wasn’t involved in the reenactment attack.
The prisoner draws a map of where the merc camp is located.
Becklin has her hands full watching over the prisoners. She asks the party to investigate the camp and see what they can find out. That can wait for morning, however. The party needs a long rest tonight! (level up to 3 slightly delayed till the end of the session).
Fully rested, the party heads out in the morning. They travel north though the somber remains of the battlefield, until a voice calls out that he has them surrounded with arrows. It’s Jeyev!
He’s bullshitting about the arrows, and the party gently claims they are friends of Cudgel, and recently survived the battle of High Hill.
Jeyev was out scouting and wasn’t quite sure what went down that left most of his group dead or missing — though he isn’t surprised Gragonis was behind it. He was following up on Gragonis’ recent disappearance and acquisition, and it’s best if he shows the rest of them.
The party warns up to the foul-mouthed merc, sensing a good person underneath his rough exterior. He’s glad to hear Gragonis died in the attack, and concerned about Cudgel.
He leads the party west. Eventually they reach a ridge overlooking hundreds of tents. A thousand soldiers, some wearing black and red armor, occupy the camp. An entire army.
It’s a shocking sight, and even Jeyev wasn’t sure what to make of it.
Suddenly the sound of snapping twigs draws their attention, as half a dozen soldiers and cloaked figures emerge behind them!
Next up: Sighting the Enemy!
