Screams and explosions ring out as the Red Dragon Army arrives at Vogler. As the sun dips beneath the horizon, monstrous soldiers step off the high cliffs surrounding the village, and unfurl their draconic wings, dropping vials of alchemical fire, while others surge through the destroyed River Gate wielding torches.
Mayor Raven thrusts a pair of healing potions at the party before they race off to buy the final evacuees more time at the wharf.
They don’t make it far before they come across a burning building. A woman screams that her husband and son are trapped inside. Two brave militia hear her pleas while urging her escape, but their attention is drawn to a pair of approaching draconians.
The party snaps into action. Kazra leads her trained warhorse forward to scoop up the frightened woman and get her out of harm’s way, while Cere rushes inside the building. A third, then fourth draconian attacks the party, forcing Ellowyin to pair up with Darrett, while Py and Elyas move to assist Kazra and the guards.
Kazra’s warhammer proves vital to knocking the baaz draconians away before their death burst can turn anyone else to stone. But the party is stymied when a new kind of draconian, a kapak, drops silently from above, murdering one of the guards.
Inside the burning, smoke-filled house, Cere sees a man trapped under a wooden beam. She moves to help him, but he insists she look for his son instead. Unfortunately the smoke and fire make it difficult, and Cere takes three full rounds to finally uncover the boy, now unconscious.
She bursts through the window and casts spare the dying, saving the boy’s life.
Not far behind is Ellowyn, who moves to assist the now unconscious husband, restoring him to life with a healing spell. He finally stumbles out as Py informs him that he saw Cere with a boy escape out the back.
The rest of the party perseveres against the draconian soldiers, though Elyas is nearly taken down by a nasty poisoned dagger attack from the kapak, and the other guard falls in battle.
But the family is safe, and they thank the party profusely.
In the distance, they spot the ghostly elven woman from the funeral, shrouded in the smoky streets. She gestures back toward the wharf, and the party sees the wharfinger’s office explode in a fiery ruin. The woman vanishes, and the party hightails it back to the wharf.
There they witness the creature that’s been causing the devastation. Or is it a creature at all?
It’s a metallic dragon on wheels, but its fiery breath attack is very real. It’s operated by a handful of draconian soldiers, and as the party approaches, they turn the boilderdrak to unleash fiery hell.
With little time to heal between battles, Elyas and Ellowyn are instantly knocked out, and the rest of the party left heavily damaged and smoldering.
But they’re not out yet!
Py revives Elyas with a potion of healing, while Cere drags Ellowyn behind an embankment and channels her divinity to heal her.
Kazra revives her horse and attacks the boilerdrak, discovering that it’s not a sentient creature at all, more like a diabolical war machine.
Darrett rallies everyone with his leadership ability, and Ellowyn casts a clutch sleep spell, centered on the draconian, rendering three of them incapacitated!
Kazra action surges and charges forward to start knocking them around, while Elyas casts dragon’s breath to meet fire with cold as he bellows elemental frost onto the machine.
Most of the soldiers are dead, and the boilerdrak heavily wounded, by the time Fewmaster Gholcag appears. The ogre crashes through the remains of the Brass Crab holding a barrel of fish. She orders a pair of soldiers to get on the boilerdrak, while she takes care of these pesky rebels.
She was not expecting the one-two punch of Cere and Ellowyn!
Cere casts blindness, and Ellowyn casts dissonant whispers. Both spells succeed, on the blinded ogre is forced to flee back into the chaotic fray, taking damage along the way.
By the time she returns, she’s lost half her health, and most of her soldiers. The party surrounds and takes her out, ending the immediate threat at the wharf.
The victory is short-lived. The village is lost, the glow of the fires lighting up the night sky and more of the army pours in.
As they load into the final boat, they hear a shout. Jeyev and Cudgel appear at the edge of a street, stumbling along. They’re heavily wounded from the battle — but alive. And notably, Becklin is not with them.
The survivors join the party, and together they all head down the Vingaard River, away from the burning village, toward an uncertain future.
Next up: Kalaman!
