The party arrives at Rookledust’s workshop — as much a fortress as a home, and finds it under siege by a small army of goblinoids bearing the ominous red and black armor of the Red Dragon Army.
About a dozen enemies, including goblin minions and bosses and hobgoblin warriors, are led by a Hobgoblin Captain. They’ve recently breached the front door, even as the gnome, Tatina Rookledust, hurls her chaotic inventions outside.
The inventions create a chaotic battlefield when the party arrives. Ellowyn, Elyas, and Py opt to hang back out of range, taking potshots with spells and bow, while Kazra and Bherg charge into the fray.
The goblins are numerous, but weak. Elyas gets a lot of use out of multi-hitting with magic missile, and Py can spread the damage around with hail of thorns.
But it’s Bherg and Kazra who become the stars of the show, withstanding strike after strike from goblins and inventions alike. Though early in the battle, the ever-brazen Kazra needs a quick reviving from Ellowyn.
Kazra pushes past the enemies blocking the doorway, only to receive a nasty slash from the Captain, nearly downing her again. The gnome has been knocked unconscious, and several goblinoids are ransacking the workshop, screaming about finding “the weapon.”
In a feat of strength and athleticism, Bherg crashes through the second story window, toppling the Hobgoblin Captain and knocking him prone. Kazra walks over and kills him with back-to-back critical hits!
As the other three finish off the stragglers outside, Bherg calls the final remaining goblins to surrender. Through intense interrogation, he discovers that the army was after a weapon designed by this gnome inventor. Bherg lets two of them go, but the third one is far more radicalized, and he the towering barbarian challenges the hobgoblin warrior to a duel, ultimately giving him a a warrior’s death.
Rookledust is revived, and informs the party that yes, the boilerdrak from Vogler is her invention. But it’s designed to clear fields, not hurt anyone. She had sold the invention to an armored woman with white hair and a glowing eye — the same imposing woman that Ellowyn and others have seen in their dreams.
The woman had ordered another invention from the gnome, but Rookledust got distracted, and made a different device altogether, a “fargab” (basically sending stones).
These goblins showed up to collect, but when she didn’t have a weapon to give, they attacked, thinking she was refusing it.
Rookledust is thankful for the rescue, and oblivious to her role in creating a weapon of mass destruction. The party is kind to her, however, and she agrees to travel with them to Kalaman. She also hands over the fargab, thinking they’ll make perfect use of it.
The party returns to Kalaman as night approaches. The castle is a hubbub of activity; the scout they rescued earlier reported in, and the council is mobilizing the army to head west to meet the split Dragon Army.
After a long rest, a recently promoted Darrett gives the party their next mission — to retake Wheelwatch Outpost.
The outpost lies on the eastern border, and had recently been taken by enemy forces. Mayor Raven (also promoted!) has been given a squad of about a dozen soldiers to retake it. But her and Darrett know the outpost, even understaffed, could easily repel them.
That’s where the party comes in.
If they can somehow slip inside and open the gates, it gives Raven’s squad a much-needed opening.
The party agrees to head out. Darrett has been ordered to remain at Kalaman, but hands over two potions of healing. They party gives one of the paired fargabs to Raven, so the two forces can remain in communication.
The party can travel faster, so they head out first. It takes most of the day to travel 24 miles southeast, across the rivers, to where the Outpost lies.
As night falls, the party decide on a plan, which unsurprisingly involves magic.
Elyas casts disguise self to appear as a draconian, while Ellowyn casts invisibility on Kazra, allowing the bulky fighter to follow behind.
Elyas-draco approaches the outpost in the dark, until guards call out. He deceives them well enough, and the gates open, allowing he and the invisible Kazra inside.
Once inside, Elyas nearly blows his cover by acting overly chummy with the human soldiers — which they don’t take kindly too. They order him to the barracks, and move to close, and relock, the gates, leaving the two party members cut off from help, and deep behind enemy lines.
Next up: Wheelwatch Outpost!
