While waiting on Kazra and Elyas, a mysterious elf steps out of the shadows, and introduces himself as Rowan. The party is suspicious, but Rowan name-drops Cudgel, Becklin, and Ispin, and knows of the party’s recent exploits — and the conquest of Vogler. He promises to help them in the battles to come.
Ellowyn feels her invisibility drop on Kazra, and Elyas’ familiar shows up with a note. The infiltrators ran into some trouble, though he was able to drop a rope around the east wall, while keeping the barracks’ guards distracted.
Under cover of night, the party hurries to the outpost’s eastern wall. Sure enough, a rope is waiting for them. Rowan clambers up first, then quickly drops a fog cloud spell to cover their ascent onto the wall.
Using Raven’s map, they note the large barracks fortification to their north. Elyas may still be in there — but it’s also probably crawling with soldiers.
They head south instead, with rangers Py and Rowan leading the stealthy charge to take out the guards at the southeastern watchtower. Ellowyn snatches the alarm horn to help maintain the peace. Korl uses his dwarven tremorsense to watch for more guards along the walls.
Unfortunately, the gate controls lie in the courtyard, and there’s no easy way down without going near the barracks.
Instead, they hop down onto the kitchen, then down to the courtyard. Korl muffles their movements with a silence spell, while the fog cloud keeps them generally hidden.
Korl casts another helpful spell once they’ve all dropped down: calm emotions, targeting the two guards in the courtyard. They nod indifferently as the party quietly makes it over to the prison area, to check for Kazra.
Inside, they spot a desk and two cells. A random soldier is in one, while Kazra is in the other. She’s busy rambling about dead horses and monster dragons to a commanding officer, who turns to see the party in shock.
He raises his crossbow, but the party is on him instantly. He’s able to shout for aid, and it’s just enough to break Korl’s spell on the soldiers outside, detecting harm to their ally.
The officer goes down, and they free Kazra with his keys, but outside the room the fort is starting to wake up.
The soldiers advance on the party, while those in the Northeastern tower move to throw javelins, or race down the walls.
The ones in the barracks are delayed, possibly thanks to Elyas’ shenanigans, but the party still has their hands full. Kazra helps keep some reinforcements at bay, but the party discovers her fear: from out of the stables comes a dragonnel, a small cousin of the dragon, with barding and a mounted rider.
The pair take to the skies and begin strafing and stabbing, nearly skewering Korl.
Py radios in with the fargab, telling Raven to haul butt over here, while Cere and the others unlock and start opening the heavy northern gate.
After a few tense rounds of fighting, the gate opens, and Raven’s troops rush through. Not a moment too soon, as the barracks finally fling open, pouring out a parade of Dragon Army soldiers.
The reinforcements can battle the soldiers, but Raven’s troops can’t deal with the dangerous flying pair.
While the rangers let loose their deadly arrows, Ellowyn casts sleep, knocking both dragon and rider out of the sky. The rider is crushed instantly, while the dragonnel picks back up, then takes an arrow to the head.
As the fighting wraps up, Raven begins cheering for Kalaman and Vogler. Finally, a victory!
Then a serrated sword protrudes from her back, and she spits up blood. One of her nearby soldiers transforms, revealing itself as a sivak draconian!
The creature flings her lifeless body aside and snarls, “For Kansaldi Fire-Eyes. You have may won this battle, but the war is ours.”
The creature takes flight and leaves with its powerful wings, as the party looks on in shock.
