After enjoying a long rest with the Kalaman army camp outside the Sunward Fortress, the party makes their way west toward the third ancient ruin site on Dalamar’s list. The army will travel behind them; Rowan will take Yearkal back to the elves outside the shrine, while Rone, a native resident of the Wastes, will travel with the party.
With Rone’s assistance, the two-day travel is blissfully uneventful. But the young scout normally stays away from ancient ruins, and he’s apprehensive when the party nears an ancient elven tower in partial destruction, its crumbling walls hovering in mid-air instead of falling.

The rusty iron gate isn’t locked, and they find no sign of Dalamar. They head inside the first level, finding a statue of a elven guardian with hundreds of silver coins at the base.
Elyas recognizes a solemn guardian of a crypt, and visitors are expected to leave a silver coin.
Everyone makes sure to leave a coin, including one for Rone, and they head upstairs.
The second floor is much worse for wear, with part of the ceiling collapse, and the entire ascending staircase ruined with rumble.
Two sarcophagi lie open, and a pair of angry wraiths emerge to attack! One of them sinks a claw into Kazra, who’s familiar with their life-draining touch, though Cere helps protect her with her Warding Flare.
The party quickly dispatches the creatures, but one of them seemingly turns into an elven ghost, and floats up to the floor above.
Cere’s detect magic finds a magical cloak in one of the crypts. Kazra wants to hurry after the ghost woman, and Elyas helps by casting mist step up the hole above, and finding a spot to tie the Kazra’s rope for the others.
The ghostly elven woman stands at the third floor, staring at a magic longsword that lies on the ground. She first speaks Elvish, then switches to heavily accented Common.
She introduces herself as Jentida, a guard at Wakenreth, but she’s confused about the events that happened here. She feels a strange rage and pull coming from above, threatening to corrupt her again, and she wants to find her sister, Telandria.
Kazra pledges to help find her sister, though Cere and the others wonder at her words, “lost somewhere in the city,” seeing as how there’s clearly no city around here!
With Kazra’s heartfelt pledge, Jentida agrees to accompany them. She possesses the sword, transforming it into a dancing sword that summons her whenever it’s tossed in battle.
The stairs to the final floor are thankfully unobstructed. While the other floors featured magic sconces, the top floor is bathed in eerie dim light. A magic portal lies open, with a window into darkness. Outside the crumbling tower provides a startling view of dark, vast space, as if the tower were thousands of feet high, or somewhere else entirely.
With nowhere else to go, the party begins charging through the portal.

On the other side, they immediately feel a despair and malaise cling all around them. The open space now reveals rolling black and gray hills, and everywhere is unsettlingly dark.
Ahead of them is a shadowy humanoid that hisses at them, and unleashes a spell — but it’s countered by Elyas!
The party rushes into action, lighting lamps and charging with weapon attacks at the shadowy spellcaster.
The shadow teleports away to blast the party, and uses its own counterspell to absorb a nasty lighting bolt spell from Elyas.
When Cere ignites it with radiant damage from an avatar of Reorx (summoned from her necklace of prayer beads), they can see a confused elven man underneath. After a few more attacks, the shadow dissipates, leaving only a ghostly, weathered elf in robes.
His name is Veriel, and he’s the caretaker of the tower. When the city Onyari began to fall, Veriel tried to use the magic of the tower to teleport it to the Feywild. But the destruction caused the tower instead to partially transport into the Shadowfell, and the open portal soon corrupted he and others.
But, he kept his charge of protecting the tower, and has stood sentry over the portal. The party hears the ghastly wails of creatures drawn to its light, as Veriel explains how he can now close the portal, if they can protect him!
Everyone hurries back through to the material plane, where Veriel begins working on repairing the runes.
Elyas drops a cloud of daggers spell on the portal entrance, and Darryl and Kazra form a defensive phalanx.

Everyone’s ready when the first wave appears, swarms of flying stirges, followed by several ghouls. Thanks to the party’s expert tactics, their foes are quickly dispatched.
An earth-shaking roar signals the arrival of a massive undead behemoth that soon emerges. Despite its terrible claws and entrapping ribcage, the party fends off its attacks, Ellowyn handicaps it with a slow spell, and Veriel finishes his ritual, shutting the portal. The party quickly destroys the undead beast.
Dalamar shows up a heartbeat later, impressed with their work, and Veriel fades away with his mission complete. Jentida opts to remain, still in search of her sister.
As the party rests up in the cleared tower, Dalamar spends the next 24 hours in a special ritual using the information they’ve gathered, to hopefully locate this City of Lost Names.
