Things weren’t looking great for our heroes as they aggro’d the entirety of Camp Carrionclay, including over a dozen soldiers, a hobgoblin captain, a hobgoblin warlord, and a sivak draconian!
Darryl, the brave barbarian with a martyr complex, was already surrounded by half the enemy forces, and was in serious trouble.
Thankfully the party has a few tricks — including reinforcements!
For the first time since Session 0, I opened up the player count, allowing additional players in who signed up for this week’s session. The result was an 8-person party: everyone from last session, plus the arrival of Elyas, Ellowyn, and Kazra, who all come charging in through the gate entrance.
The other trick is the invisible Korl, who picks the lock on the captive bulette, sending it after the hobgoblin captain, and freeing Becklin, their friend and ally from Vogler.
Soon after, Elyas polymorphs Becklin into a giant ape!

Rowan struggles against the soldiers and draconians on the south side, though Cere’s Guardian of Faith proves a helpful ally.
Kazra charges forward on Horsey, racing over 100ft to the north to help pry some of the soldiers off of Darryl. Cere follows suit (though much slower), providing divine assistance and warding flares.
On the watchtower, Py fires arrows into the biggest targets, though one of the officers heads up the ladder to engage the gnome ranger in melee, keeping him busy.
Darryl never loses his focus, taking down the brutal sivak draconian, “For Raven!” and shrugging off its posthumous ghostly scare.
He’s nearly cut down by the warlord, Fewmaster Zirrok, but Cere is there to provide a huge healing boost. In response, the frustrated but calculating hobgoblin boss decides to cut down Darryl’s allies instead, making him watch. He succeeds, though Cere, and then Korl, heal everyone back to conciousness.
Then the dragon shows up.

Black scales descend from the skies, followed by a piercing roar. The first true dragon any of the player characters have ever seen! They stand tall against its frightful presence, even as it slams into the Becklin-giant ape, picking up the great beast and dropping it into the water outside of camp.
As it flies, it summons clouds of insects, and flings acid arrows at the party.
Undeterred, the party continue their work on the ground.
The freed bulette wrecks a bit of havoc, taking out a few soldiers before burrowing away.
Kazra and Darryl, critically wounded, gang up on Zirrok, supported by Cere, then Korl and Ellowyn.
Elyas and Rowan help clean up the soldiers on the southern side.
Py, still battling on the watchtower, provokes the ire of the adult black dragon. Akhiviri picks up the gnome and hurls him into the water on the other side, though not before Ellowyn carefully casts feather fall.
The giant ape eventually pulls herself out of the water and over the wall. The next thing the party sees, are large cages being ripped up and hurled at the watchtower, sending it, and the officer inside, crumbling to the ground (thankfully, no captive elves were harmed!).
The dragon yells about “the egg” and moves to the large tent of the Fewmaster, rummaging around for her prize.
The distraction buys more time for the party to finish off more soldiers, and the badly wounded Zirrok finally cries out to Akhiviri to help.
The dragon sneers at the warlord’s failings, and unleashes her full acid breath on the entire group near the tent.
Despite their critical wounds, the party remains standing against the giant gout of acid. However, Zirrok dies in a gurgling pit, and Horsey, Kazra’s beloved mount since the earliest sessions, is killed by the dragon breath.
With the warlord’s chest in hand, the dragon flies off.
Distraught and filled with rage, Kazra picks up Jentida’s sword and stalks toward the final remaining soldiers, killing them in brutal, quick strikes.
The battle is finally over! The party pick through any remaining loot (though the dragon flew off with the choicest bits), and return to the Kalaman Army for a much-needed long rest, before the final trek toward the lost city.
Next up: To the Lost City!
