George, level 3 Tortle Battle Master Fighter
Therin, level 3 Hill Dwarf Druid of the Moon

Even a hostile random encounter needn’t be an instant fight. Sneaking or persuading should always be reasonable options, depending on the foes. But what trumps everything is the character’s personalities.

I was imminently please when, upon reaching  a horde of zombies that the party could’ve easily sneaked through, our undead-hating druid shapeshifted into a bear and charged them. What followed was an epic battle that lasted nearly the entire session.

DMs Guild Review – The Heir of Orcus: Verse II

Pick up where Verse I left off by delving into the demon-infested temple of Orcus in the conclusion to this pixelated Tier 1 adventure.

dms guildThe Heir of Orcus: Verse II” picks up right where the first one left off, with our heroes entering the Temple of Orcus to recover a fallen angel. It’s a direct continuation of the Tier 1 adventure designed for a 3rd level party, featuring plenty of demon battles amid a straightforward dungeon crawl.

It’s a bit shorter and simpler than Verse I and is made up entirely of the three-room temple dungeon, though like the first one the included art assets and attention to detail for each area are top-notch.

Long resting inside the shrine of Man and Crocodile allowed the sneaky goblins who had been spying on the party to set up an ambush. When the party exited, Yokka and nearly a dozen goblins in wooden masks demanded they hand over the treasure for their “Iron God.” Azaka and the canoes were gone, and Inete was held at sword point.

Tomb of Annihilation Session 12 Recap

We delve into the deathtrap dungeon and gauntlet of terror that is the House of Man and Crocodile shrine.

The ancient shrine at Camp Righteous serves as a deliciously painful appetizer for the horrors that await in Chult. It’s a miniaturized deathtrap dungeon; a veritable gauntlet of traps that would make even Indiana Jones take pause, with a supernatural gimmick that’s not terribly obvious.

But what self-respecting adventurer can resist the call of ancient tombs and forgotten treasures?

dms guild reviewWhen I reviewed “Grimm Encounters II” I wondered where the more obvious fairy tale stories were. Turns out they were here in the first installment!

Within “Grimm Encounters” you’ll find a dozen fairy tale-inspired encounters (CR 1-7), including the much more recognizable tales of Hansel and Gretel, the Three Little Pigs, and the Pied Piper. The encounters are much shorter and simpler than the sequel, but still successfully apply classic grimdark fairly tale characters and themes to Dungeons & Dragons. Well, except for the weretiger. Continue reading “Tomb of Annihilation Session 11 Recap”

Roll20 Review – Waterdeep: Dungeon of the Mad Mage

Undermountain features an absolutely gigantic mega-dungeon and some of the best dungeon designs I’ve ever seen.

It wouldn’t be a proper Dungeons & Dragons adventure without at least one dungeon crawl. Different published adventures have leaned more heavily into the dungeon theme than others, but Waterdeep: Dungeon of the Mad Mage definitely wins the Most Dungeon award I just made up.

Welcome to Undermountain, the 23-level mega-dungeon!
