[Super-size final session — no player limit!]

With the Flying Citadel falling apart around them, the party rushes to an outside plaza. Cere quickly heals Kazra to get her back on her feet, while Kazra makes sure the soldier whom Caradoc was possessing is still around (she is, but very confused).

While they hurry, Cere quickly drops a death ward on Kazra, while Rickard casts remove curse to help fix Darryl. Ellowyn uses aid to bolster some hit points.

There’s little chance for a reunion with our expanded party. The plaza is also falling apart, with crumbling walls and large pits opening up beneath them.

From out of one of the pits crawls a huge Greater Death Dragon — the reanimated bones of Karavarix, the gold dragon who led the attack on Onyari all those centuries ago.

And she’s still pretty pissed off.

After the dragon screams about “Istarian scum,” Ellowyn attempts to set the record straight. She throws herself at the mercy of the once mighty dragon, claiming that they are not her enemy.

The dragon pauses to consider her words (losing a legendary action), but it’s quickly followed by Py shooting the dragon in the face with a critical hit!

The newly uncursed Darryl charges forward with his pike, while Rowan actually spends a moment to heal their still-heavily wounded fighter/paladin.

Although Karavarix has her own statblock in Dragonlance: Shadow of the Dragon Queen, I borrowed from the 5.5e dracolich for a stronger boss encounter.

Plus, I littered the battlefield in dead soldiers!

Which mean the dragon could fly without provoking opportunity attacks and deal her unholy rend strike, proving a highly mobile enemy. And her devastating breath weapon raised any bodies in the cone as zombies!

To make matters worse, the crumbling citadel was still falling apart, smashing them with rubble, or opening large pits beneath their feet.

But, eight PCs against one undead dragon is still a lop-sided battle. Cere summoned a celestial, and the fighters and rangers did their DPS things.

Karavarix fell after about two rounds, and the party had to high-tail it off the falling island as it slid toward the ground.

Rickard and Ellowyn cast featherfall on the entire party (though Cere could use her celestial) to reach the ground safely.

Or so they thought.

From out of the thick smoke came an adult red dragon! Decked out in full dragon-sized armor. Mounted on their back is a white-haired woman with a ruby eye, and a snarl. Kansaldi Fire-Eyes, commander of the Red Dragon Army, orders her dragon Ignia to unleash a fire breath upon the party.

Thankfully Cere had just cast death ward on a weakened Darryl, who hits the ground and pops back up. Cere’s celestial is vaporized however, and the party takes heavy damage as they land in a clearing.

Kansaldi lands the dragon on a spire nearby. She knows the party is responsible for the constant meddling, including the evacuation of Vogler, the defense of Kalaman, and the partial destruction of Onyari in the Northern Wastes.

But she knows they’ve been touched by the gods, and their power is great. She offers them a chance to still join the Dragon Queen’s armies. They need only sacrifice one of their own to the fires.

While she talks, the party quickly lays down some healing and recovery spells. Kazra tells Kansaldi to go kick rocks, and the final battle begins!

Korl’s fancy footwork gives his party the leg up, and he summons his silver dragon Korl’s Jr., to help distract Ignia (who definitely doesn’t take kindly to another dragon suddenly appearing!).

Kazra relentlessly charges up the path to the spire, despite her grievous injuries.

Ellowyn summons her celestial companion, Emberwing, who helps provide some temp healing, while Rickard surprises everyone by using dimension door to teleport he and a more refreshed Darryl directly next to the red dragon!

Kansaldi attacks with her radiant pike and fire burst, while the dragon claws at nearby foes, and fires off spells.

However, their spellcasting is soon stymied when Korl casts silence on top of it, and when the dragon tries to fly and escape, Rickard manages to pin it down!

Thankfully for the party, Ignia never recharges their fire breath. Though once again the party must deal with the hazardous environment as the crashing citadel rains down around them.

Both villains end up burning through all three of their Legendary Resistances, and Rickard summons a Circle of Power, though without spellcasting or fire breath, there aren’t many saves headed their way!

Even Py and Korl join in the melee, leaving only Rowan still dedicated to shooting from afar, while Cere casts Heal, followed by Aura of Vitality to keep everyone conscious.

Kansaldi’s divine healing can’t keep up with the party’s combined damaged, and the dragon’s silenced spells and lack of mobility eventually spill its doom, though not before Kansaldi nearly kills Kazra, only for her to come back from death ward.

Kazra uses the dragonlance to get the killing blow on Ignia, rendering her 2 for 2 on taking down adult dragon bosses!

But it’s Darryl who delivers the mortal wound to Kansaldi, repeating the name of his fallen son from Vogler, as he hurls her body off the dragon’s corpse.

With the fall of the citadel and the commander, the remains of the dragon army are in a full rout. The citadel crashes in the distance, while Darrett and company ride up on horses with a small army, overjoyed to see the party still alive.

The battle for Kalaman has been won, though the war across Ansalon has only just begun.
