As the party sifts through their inventory and begins distrusting and chugging their potions, they receive a sudden magical projection from a resplendent triton. It’s Gillian Flounderson, hero of Tomb of Annihilation and War for the Lost Plane

Kysh and Harley had made it to their fortress, informed their leader, Gillian, and now the tritons had arrived to battle the Brain-controlled kraken.

Gillian’s message is anything but comforting, however. Though she confirms the kraken is acting erratically, it’s still formidable. Not to mention its minions! Her forces have suffered heavy losses, and she’s reaching out to any survivors nearby to come to their aid.

The party are on their way!

Using Savra’s flying psionic suit, they ascend 50ft to the water-barrier above, emerging into an underwater battlefield.

An army of tritons battle the forces of Slarkrethel, while the kraken himself attacks with tentacles and lightning strikes. Its head is marred by the hideously large elder brain sunk into its skull.

However, thanks to the party’s work, Zellix’Phor is losing control. The kraken gets to make Wisdom saving throws every round. Success puts him into an incapacitated state, but the Elder Brain still operates the massive creature’s Legendary Actions – including that nasty lighting strike.

The party clashes with the surrounding minions: merrow, deep scions, and kraken priests, as well as a custom Kraken Battle table that acts as a randomized Lair Action.

Despite half a dozen effects, the party triggers the same frightening effect (borrowed from the kraken priests’ Voice of the Kraken ability) every round, preventing them from reaching the kraken or the brain.

They have their hands full regardless, as the minions begin to swarm them.

Torrel lays down Evard’s black tentacles, restraining three merrow, while Mac drops one of the scions inside.

Gotwald gleefully swims forward with his axe, while Savra plays with her new toy. Despite being unable to cast inside of the suit, she has fun using its gauntlets and psychic ranged attacks — not to mention its superior AC and HP.

The kraken’s Legendary Action lightning attack does 20-40 damage at least twice a round, with a DC 23 DEX save — ouch.

The party gets beaten up, but they’re not alone.

They also have access to their allies, each of which has special abilities that can be activated once per round, including a saving throw bonus from Kazin, and some much-needed healing from Gillian.

After getting stabbed and shocked too many times, Mac is forced to use another of the “mind flayer drugs,” the injectables found in Luzgrigaul’s workshop. They provide a huge dose of healing, along with some odd side effects. He already has tentacle arms, and injecting another gives him eye stalks!

The party defeats some of the minions, but still haven’t reached the kraken. Thankfully, it makes the saving throw against the Elder Brain almost every round, and the tritons have kept it busy, with their lives.

The battle continues to rage….
