The party flew from the lost city with the help of Rone’s dragonnels. They use the fargab to reestablish contact with Darrett and the Kalaman army, learning the surviving army made it to the east coast of the Wastes.

The trip east takes several days before they finally touch down, causing a brief commotion as the dragonnels approach.

Darrett is relieved to see them, and pleased they were able to destroy the City of Lost Names, and prevent it from falling into the enemey’s hands.

The distraction from the Kalaman army cost them dearly, losing nearly a third of their soldiers. The wounded have already been sent on ships, but Darrett insisted on waiting until the last ship, holding out hope that the party would emerge.

The party does bear some bad news, however: one part of the city remains intact and fully operational. The Temple of Takhisis has arisen with the power of cataclysmic fire, which also resurrects dead dragons as powerful undead threats under the Dragon Army’s control.

The small flying island now flies southward, toward Kalaman, and the bulk of the Dragon Army.

Darrett thanks Rone for his heroics, and asks him to scout the Temple, then report back when he can. Then the party and the rest of the Kalaman army finally take their leave of the Northern Wastes, and set off on the nearly week-long voyage back to Kalaman.

The mood in Kalaman is bleak. While many are happy to see their loved ones return, many more are mourning losses from the northern excursion.

The Dragon Army has continued to gain ground around the region, and has now effectively surrounded the city. Many folks have fled.

The council chambers within the castle has seen some repairs since the attack by undead soldiers, but many of the councilor seats remain empty.

In the Governor’s chair now sits Lord Bakaris, the self-serving, pompous noble from Vogler whom the party has tussled with numerous times.

Thankfully, Marshal Vendri is still there as well, and she’s relieved to see the party return, and pleased at their success.

But it’s short-lived when the party report the flying Temple heading this way.

Bakaris has been trying diplomacy with the Dragon Army, which the party scoffs at. As Ellowyn and the others trade barbs with Bakaris, Vendri suggests they all get an evening off to unwind.

A messenger repots that a dragon creature has landed on the north wall, prompting the party to rush out with Darrett. They find an exhausted Rone, and after drinking some water and catching his breath, he reports on the Flying Citadel.

The area is heavily patrolled by death dragons and mounted dragonnels, and the Dragon Army has a full encampment on the island. At its steady pace, he estimates it will arrive within a day or two.

While landing on the top is suicide, he noticed the bottom is riddled with tunnels. A small force could potentially make it inside, but the flying patrols would need to be distracted or pulled away.

Darrett realizes they best chance they have to infiltrate the citadel, will be during the forthcoming siege.

The party asks if they can use the dragonnels to fly up to the citadel. Rone reluctantly agrees, though he’ll need to leave and fetch them, making it a tight window.

After some shopping and meeting up with Ellowyn’s parents, the party relaxes at a tavern. But their time off is interrupted by reports of a suspiciously unmanned gate on the east side of the city.

They head over, discovering the gates open, and the portcullis rising! When Korl asks what’s going on the soldiers draw weapons and tell them to piss off.

Rowan uses the cover of darkness to rush forward and pepper the enemy with arrows. With his superior darkvision, he spots a squadron of a dozen Dragon Army soldiers quietly waiting just beyond the gate.

Ellowyn rushes up, and through the gatehouse sees a nervous Lord Bakaris overseeing the soldiers raising the portcullis.

Anger and shock takes over the kender bard as she launches a fireball into the gatehouse!

Bakaris collapses, while Darryl rushes into the gatehouse to knock the wounded soldiers around, and shoves his spear into the mechanism, forcing the portcullis to fall back down.

The party angrily defeats the remaining soldiers (including Rowan shooting a fleeing soldier), leaving a single one groveling for his life.

The dying Lord Bakaris mentions his son is still alive, and he was trying to reach him. He also says that the city is doomed, and the only chance is to join the Dragon Army.

The party finds a letter addressed to father from son, confirming that the youngest Bakaris had joined the Dragon Army after his earlier capture.

Before the party can report this betrayal, they spot a purple comet slam into the city from above, destroying half a city block of buildings.

They follow the screams to the impact site, where they see the jagged meteor unfurl into a pair of lesser death dragons! The dragon use their cataclysmic breath on nearby fleeing citizens, killing them and transforming the bodies into zombies.

The party waste no time jumping into action. Ellowyn conjures a celestial steed from Sirron’s flames, while Korl summons a dang dragon!

Kazra jumps on Emberwing, while Darryl rides the dragon into battle, meeting the death dragons head on, and skewering the zombies.

Rowan actually humbles them all with a massive critical hit from his dreadful striking bow. The death dragons stand little chance against the party — but they inflict terrible damage on the citizenry and buildings before being brought down.

As the last one falls, they find a message written on its fossilized hide, declaring the party seen and marked by the Dragon Queen — and the leader of the Dragon Army, Kansaldi Fire-Eyes.

Next up: The Siege of Kalaman!
