With the guard dispatched, Varrow quickly breaks into the treasury room, and the party help themselves to over 2,000 gold pieces from the overflowing treasure chests. Paperwork in the desk reveals ledgers, payroll, and other bookkeeping for the Onyx Scar, which the party also swipes.
They need to hit up Edino’s office for the other soul-shards, which lies down the stairs.
Stayzie simply waltzes right down into a large storage room, and is immediately attacked by a pair of guards on high alert (X9)!
It’s been over an hour since the party last fought Aminta, and she hasn’t been sitting around idly by.

The battle includes two toughs in the room, while two warrior veterans and Aminta herself lurk in the hallway just outside (X8).
The initial volley fails to hit Stayzie, and the others quickly move down the stairs to join the fight. Elowen summons her moonbeam, Taveen attacks with a flurry of blows, and Varrow uses his wand of web to web up the entryhall, getting one of the veterans stuck.
Aminta fires her envenomed bolts, but she struggles to hit, and backs off toward the north. The toughs are quickly cut down, while the unstuck veteran charges forward. But these enemies are no match for the short-rested party, and soon they’re getting pummeled as well.
Aminta fires a nasty hit at Stayzie, who responds by charging with her orcish adrenaline down the hallway, and keeping her pinned with her Guardian feat — an effective move against a hit-and-run boss!
Aminta calls for reinforcements in the nearby rooms, as doors fly open and five more toughs join the fight!
Stayzie is completely surrounded and brought down to 9 hp before the rest of the party catches up to her. Taveen uses hand of healing, Elowen (who’s spent each turn moving her moonbeam on top of enemies), rushes up to administer a potion of healing, while Stayzie herself downs a potion of superior healing, getting back up to 50 hp.
Varrow throws a critical hit dagger, dealing over 30 damage to the wounded assassin. Stayzie strikes at her as well, though her shard pulses anxiously. The shard possessed by Rilago, her former lover!
She strikes again, and this time Rilago’s anguish causes the shard to spread more black veins along her body, and she becomes poisoned!
However, Varrow had added an ensnaring strike onto his nast hit, restraining Aminta, and with the adv/disdv cancel, Stayzie gets a critical hit, defeating Aminta.
At the last moment, she decides to knock her out rather than kill her. She can feel Rilago breath a sigh of relief.
Then, Chéri casts suggestion on one of the toughs, and forces him to remove the pants of all the other guards.
Seeing Aminta fall, the soon-to-be pantsless guards surrender, and the party captures them and Aminta.
The Onyx Scar leader isn’t aware of the side effects of the enhanced shards that Edino was making, nor that they contained the souls of others. Edino has some explaining to do!
His office holds the last two soul shards, though no information on how to reverse the process.
Rilago seems to know, however. The ghostly apparition guides Stayzie and the party back to the central chamber, and the petrified body of Xeluan.
There, he performs a ritual, returning the soul shards to the giant body, and releasing their sprits. Earthquakes continue to rumble dangerously around them. Rilago apologizes for his actions, and thanks the party for helping him, and makes Stayzie promise to continue sparing the life of Aminta, even though she’s gone down a bad path.
Then, he pulls the infected shard out of Stayzie’s arm, and shoves it back into the statue. Rilago disappears as a burst of energy emanates from the statue. Though still somewhat chipped and broken, much of the hole in the chest repairs itself, and a new sheen of magical force ripples across its surface, protecting the giant’s body, and in turn, protecting the village above.
With Aminta mollified and defeated, and only just learning of what the party was doing, they’re allowed to exit the dig site and return to the town of Oztocan.
