Keys from the Golden Vault Session 20

Starring
Varrow, level 5 gnome Thief Rogue
Stayzie Diamondz, level 5 orc Champion Fighter
Elowen Fernwhisper, level 5 wood elf Circle of the Moon Druid
Chéri Powder, level 5 human Illusionist Wizard
Taveen, level 5 aasimar Warrior of Mercy Monk

With Abbott Kavoda’s help, the party is able to decipher the control panel in the power station — and Stayzie flicks all the buttons to ‘on.’

All the bridges that were previously raised and retracted now begin lowering down all over the town of Little Lockford. The way forward is clear!

After a quick a short rest around the power station, the party begins heading over to the bridge toward the central Overlook, home to the Lockford Securty Center, and presumably, Overseer Tockworth herself.

But the Overseer isn’t sitting idly by. With all the bridges suddenly activated, she sends a large patrol of clockwork soldiers toward Turbine Heights.

Chéri acts fast, using his recently acquired dust of disappearance to render the entire party (plus their various NPC allies) invisible for several minutes. [the DM forgot that the clockworks have blindsight, although the party still had to roll a group Stealth check to silently get past them].

As the clockworks search, the party successfully slips past them and onto the bridge.

Tockworth’s second plan is to simply raise the bridges again — she has access to the controls as well!

The bridge begins retracting at the halfway point, and both halves begin raising like a drawbridge, forcing the party to haul butt to the other side.

Varrow stumbles a bit, tumbling down the other side in a undignified heap. But at least they all make it into the hollowed-out stalactite of the Overlook.

Despite its appearance as an engineered skyscraper, the Overlook is still mostly natural caverns, holding fungi gardens, and home to various sizes of docile lizards, including some the size of large bears.

In the center is the obvious Security Center, a cylindrical building topped with a crystal dome, though no guards are in sight.

As a forest gnome, Varrow casts speak with animals and talks to some nearby lizards. The creatures are no fans of the automatons, bemoaning the lack of food and care they once received. Varrow convinces them to help overthrow their robotic oppressors, and comes out of a cave triumphantly riding giant lizard!

But as the party approaches the Security Center, a loudspeaker activates. The shrill, robotic voice of Tixie Tockworth yells about the approaching “pathetic meat bags.”

The dome of the Security Center shifts and transforms, revealing hundreds of gears. Panels open and deploy several swarms of robotic flying insects, while other sections form mobile stalks that end in cannons!

The four cannons begin firing beams that deal damage, confuse, fear, and paralyze, while a swarm flies all over Stayzie, enveloping her with their electrified stingers.

Taveen helps pull them off, and the party gets to work attacking the nasty swarms, though Chéri’s fog cloud is rendered useless when he (and the DM) realizes the enemies have blindsight.

The lizard-mounted Varrow climbs up the Security Center dome to attack the turrets directly, destroying one, though a swarm turns their attention to him! One of his large lizard allies is able to swipe the swarm off, giving Varrow a chance to retreat to the far side.

But the poor lizard pays the price, as the swarm envelops the beast and stings it to death with a critical hit! RIP sweet prince.
