As Taveen’s potion nears completion, a monstrous new threat emerges: an amalgamation of charred corpses lurches around a corner, intent on adding the party to its fleshy pile!

The party nicknames it the Cuddle Puddle, despite no moisture whatsoever! (it’s a reskinned Shambling Mound).

The Ashen Mound struggles to grab Taveen or Chéri, and the monk thankfully finishes his brew, and declares that they need to get the hell out of there, as Elowen arrives to assist.

But Stayzie has been gleefully battling the burned monsters on the south end, and when she sees the giant mound of bodies, she starts hacking away.

However, a Nat 1 attack roll triggers her forcibly embedded cursed shard, sending bolts of energy (magic missile) firing in different directions!

Randomly, two of the bolts target Varrow, who has otherwise been successfully hiding, and randomly, the damage is enough to actually down the rogue for the first time this campaign.

Wow!

Taveen and Elowen notice the rogue’s bleeding body, and Elowen quickly props him back up with a massive level 2 cure wounds (5.5e healing is twice as powerful!)

Stayzie continues to battle the Ashen Mound while the others deal with the straggler husks and mephits. However, the enemies don’t stop coming, drawn to the action at the monastery.

But just as the party looks to start escaping, Stayzie is pulled into the mound!

This prompts Elowen to shift into bear form to help attack it, Taveen to use his combo flurry of blows and hand of healing on Stayzie and the Mound, and Varrow to drop another fog cloud to protect them from the nasty range attacks of the Ashen Husks.

Finally, Stayzie successfully carves out of the mound, and with the cover of the fog cloud, the party is able to quickly escape the area.

They’re still not sure what to actually do with the potion, but Taveen knows it’ll be important.

Their destination is Castle Cinnis, but before arriving, they quickly find an abandoned, more intact building that they can settle in for a quick short rest to recover their wounds. Varrow ends up spending all his hit dice!

They also look at the map that Naevys had provided, right before her transformation into a fiery creature.

The map reveals the different rooms of the castle. However, the castle is under the fiery portal hovering in the sky, and entire pieces of it have broken off and floating upward!

At least the map points out some windows for easy access.

Elowen casts pass without trace to avoid the patrolling guards as the party makes their way to the east side library. The entire mage tower on the first floor has been ripped off, and now floats above them, about even with the second story.

Varrow breaks into the window and the party, surprisingly together, infiltrates the castle. There they need to find and somehow save the King, and the kingdom, from this apocalyptic destruction.
