Previously on Call from the Deep

Starring:
Gotwald Ironhorn, level 8 minotaur Rune Knight Fighter
Mac, level 8 tortle Drakewarden Ranger/Rogue
Savra Akkedis, level 8 lizardfolk School of Necromancy Wizard
Torrel, level 8 kenku Fathomless Warlock Pact of the Amulet/Fighter

Due to some power-related real-life difficulties this week, this was a shorter session of mostly leveling up and shopping.

Having saved the lizard queen and numerous other NPCs from the clutches of the sahuagin, and escaped with their lives, the party enjoyed a much-needed long rest back at Thornhold castle, and leveled up to eight.

Master Sliver teaches Mac some new techniques, and the tortle takes a multiclass level into rogue. Rogue dip!

Sliver and the kidnapped prisoners bid farewell and remain in Thornhold, ready to take the next caravan north back to Neverwinter.

The Queen remains with her people, hoping to foster a strong alliance with Thornhold against the sahuagin.

Borgas and the tritons officially join the ship as allies on the adventure.

The party has two quests remaining: journeying down to the Nelanther Isles in search of Sea King Tentrix’s lair, and investigating the island city of Orlumbor on the behest of their aboleth patron from Neverwinter.

Orlumbor is quite closer, and once again they can hug the coast as they travel for a speedy journey.

Waterdeep, one of the biggest cities on Faerun, is literally on the way as they head south. The party pulls up and enjoys a shopping list of uncommon magic items the DM threw together:

  • Gem of Brightness
  • Hat of Disguise
  • Medallion of Thoughts
  • Pearl of Power
  • Periapt of Wound Closure
  • Ring of Jumping
  • Ring of Water Walking

Xanathar’s Guide to Everything has some price ranges for magic items. Using that, plus the players’ current funds, I set all prices somewhere around 200-300gp. A bit low but not unreasonable, and fully expected everyone to haggle.

And haggle they did!

This shopping montage took up most of the session.

Torrel stymied by his lack of light in the last dungeon, picks up the gem of brightness. Gotwald, stymied by his lack of hit dice, purchases the periapt of wound closure, and sure to his nature, doesn’t try to haggle at all!

Savra has her eye on the pearl of power for extra spell slot goodness, while Mac waltzes into a hat store to grab their only magical hat of disguise.

Everyone uses a mix of role-playing and skill checks to get various discounts, paying closer to 150-200gp.

Except for Mac, who decides to barter his gloves of missile snaring, complete with in-store demonstration! The shopkeeper is suitable impressed and astonished, and agrees to the trade.

call from the deep waterdeep shopping

While shopping, the party learns of a rumor going around. The Black Armada had feebly attacked Waterdeep but were much less successful than Neverwinter.

But rumors swirl that the armada wasn’t trying to conquer or kidnap. The attack was a distraction, as a team delved into Deepwater Harbor and retrieved a carefully hidden and guarded treasure: a marid conch, said to contain a marid who can grant wishes.

Such an artifact in the hands of Sea King Tentrix makes Gotwald growl, and the party heads back to the ship.

After a few days of uneventful coastal travel, the party arrives in Orlumbor, a run-down, grimy, corrupt city worn by years of fighting and control from the Sword Coast.

The aboleth found one of the mind flayer leaders is here, and certainly up to no good. The last one the party found had transformed half the populace of Gunderlun into a mutated fighting force.

Soon after stepping off their ship they see an older man being harassed by street urchins. A nearby group of militia laugh and sneer instead of help, but when they see the party, they demand an entrance fee. Twenty gold each.

The Zoo Crew just spent a lot of money, and aren’t happy about the obvious extortion. Savra uses the friends cantrip to talk the captain down to 5gp each (both roll less than 6 on the contested check, but Savra’s is higher!).

Gotwald grabs the urchins by the scruff and lifts them up, gently threatening them. The kids scramble off, and the militia walk away, leaving them with the man.

The man introduces himself as Dr. Ira Refrum, a local physician and alchemist.

He had seen the party’s ship approach, and wants to hire them for a job: to investigate a rash of murders, and his friend’s potentially wrongful blame and execution!
