The Night Fiend of Ravenloft is a quick mini-adventure (almost an encounter) for 3rd level characters. It fits perfectly within Curse of Strahd, but could be used for any horror-themed scenario, as the party are tasked with destroying a kidnapping Oni, who may already be dead.

Pact of the Gambler isn’t the first subclass to use playing cards as a resource – but I still love seeing it every time. The concept of a card-based resource system and gambling theme is very enticing, but a class built on gambling and random chance is a tricky thing to properly balance.

With my background as a band nerd, Bards should be one of my favorite DnD classes. But the 5th edition version leaves much to be desired, with much of their musical prowess distilled down to giving out Bardic Inspiration. Group Spellcasting: Concerts adds a new Performance-based spellcasting system for multiple player characters – not just Bards, along with over 20 new concert spells.

I was never a big fan of the holy warrior/chivalric knight archetype until D&D Fifth Edition. The 5e Paladin is very well designed, capable of tanking, healing, and dishing out lots of damage via divine smites, as well as a very complimentary spell list.

But the Paladin also has the least diverse subclasses, with many Oaths that feel a bit too standard and same-y. The Oath of the Nighbringer is a thematically sound new subclasses, but also highlights that lack of diversity.

With Radiant light pouring out of Scarlet, she swings her sword at the angel, his own light fading. He grimaces as the sword strikes into his chest, and for the first time he looks sad and resigned.

“We just wanted something better for us,” he intones, the light rapidly fading from his sagging body.

“That’s your problem,” Scarlet replies, her tone as even-keeled as always. “Gods don’t just think of themselves. You were never going to create anything other than chaos and ruin. Now it is your time to return to the light. May the gods have mercy on you.”

She pulls the sword free and the once grand celestial being slumps over, his body now floating in the void surrounding us.

From nearby, Irathon screams.

Pirate-themed player characters are a common theme for adventuring, usually represented in the fighter and rogue classes. College of the Crow’s Nest takes a surprising turn with the bard as a swashbuckling explorer, but by utilizing a fun new treasure-seeking feature, creates a worthy new subclass.

Scarlet hurries back, spellbook in hand, Gillian’s magical wind whipping her hair back and forth – keeping the acid cloud at bay.

The triumphant moment is interrupted by an earth-shattering roar. The World Ender! We’re out of time.

From nearby we hear ominous squelching noises.

“Is Scarlet done yet?” calls Kethra, “We need to get out of here. There’s something coming!”
