The Zoo Crew may have bluffed their way onto the Sea Ghost, but the ruse quickly ends when Gotwald and the Captain recognize each other.

Gotwald once served alongside “Snake Eyes” Sigurd before the failed munity. The captain is surprised to find Gotwald alive, but it doesn’t change his plans — to tie up loose ends and eliminate the smugglers.

Roll for initiative!

The big Sea Ghost brawl initially includes Captain Sigurd, his first mate, the deck wizard, and five bandits (one of who is 40-ft up in the crow’s nest).

Gotwald wastes no time charging up the stairs onto the Poop Deck (area 3) and hammering one of the bandits with his horns, taking him down.

The nearest random bandit screams in rage (his husband! you bastard!) and attacks Gotwald. And misses. Through several rounds he continues to feebly miss Gotwald, while Gotwald pointedly ignores him, eventually causing the pirate to give up altogether, drop his weapon, and cradle his lover’s body.

This will prove oddly yet critically important later on!

Back on the main deck, Mac shoves the first mate overboard, though the pirate is able to quickly grab the rowboat the party had used to reach the ship.

Savra and Torrel unleash damaging spells, and the deck wizard responds with his own acid arrows. Savra gets a lot of use out of her shield spell when the captain begins flourishing his longsword against her.

Reinforcements are quickly summoned, adding two more bandits to the fray.

When the angry first mate reaches the top, Mac shoves him off the boat again!

Dozens of bolts pepper the party from all sides (mostly missing), but Torrel goes down, needing to be revived by Gotwald.

Mac murderizes several more pirates using his powerful bow, while continuing to keep the first mate busy.

Call from the Deep Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh p4

The deck wizard fails to take down Savra. Under the captain’s orders, she flees below deck using misty step to gather more reinforcements. The captain specifically mentions something about the sahuagin.

In an epic maneuver, Gotwald shoves the captain overboard, opposite the rowboat side. This prompts the first mate (who still hasn’t taken any actual damage) to take the rowboat and try to rescue him.

By the time he reaches the captain, Torrel is back up and finally summons his spectral tentacle, lashing at the captain. Just as the pair are prepared to abandon ship and row away, Savra downs the captain with toll the dead, and Gotwald leaps onto the rowboat to take out the shocked first mate.

The party is temporarily triumphant, though badly wounded. They quickly take a 5-minue short rest, knowing more enemies lurk below.

But they’re shocked when a trio of sahaugin suddenly climb up the side of the ship!

The monstrous shark-folk are eager for blood. Most of the party is wounded even after the short rest, triggering their blood frenzy.

In a sobering moment, Torrel and Mac miss their big attacks, and they and Savra all go down in the same round to multiattack + advantage.

Ruh-roh.

Three of the four party are down. All three sahaugin are still up, though they’re all badly wounded.

While the rest begin to roll death saves, Gotwald takes out one of the enemies.

Then in a moment of karmic justice (read: DM panic-balancing), that one despondent pirate who gave up his revenge against Gotwald suddenly stands up, yells about hating these fishy bastards most of all, and tackles one of them overboard.

Gotwald takes out the final wounded sahuagin, and quickly revives the others.

Is the battle finally over? Were the sahuagin the only reinforcements? What were they doing helping these pirates?

The deck wizard still lurks somewhere, and the party has yet to actually explore the ship. Hopefully they’ll find some answers next time!
