After escaping the terrifying tentacle monstrosity that dragged the derelict ship to the briny depths, the party enjoys a much quieter final day of travel toward the island of Gunderlun, and the hub city of Gundbarg.

They also have a chance to properly meet the three people they had rescued from the sahuagin: Bern, the disturbed teenager, Aubrek, the snotty merchant, and Shandri, the ship’s doctor and cleric-in-training.

As a member of the original ship crew aboard the Emperor of the Waves, Shandri proves the most useful for information.

She explains how the ship was sent to get help from Neverwinter. A strange ship had crashed on the other side of the island, and the nearby Jarl reported people missing, even deaths. When King Redaxe sent scouts to follow-up, they never returned.

Meanwhile, the city of Gundbarg has been dealing with increased pirate and sea monster threats. Forced to send their forces to patrol the waters and shore up their defenses, King Redaxe had sent a ship to ask for help from fellow Lord’s Alliance members across the sea.

That message was never delivered thanks to the sahuagin, but the Zoo Crew has arrived!

Shandri acts as liaison for the party’s arrival in Gundbarg, a city used to seeing all kinds of folks stopping by while at sea. They stock up on potions at the Saltwood Storehouse, and pool their money to purchase a ram upgrade for their ship.

They also level up to four, and Torrel multiclasses into Fighter, donning medium armor and a shield. Together with his Cloak of Protection, he raises his AC to 20!

Call from the Deep Gundbarg

With Shandri introducing them, the party meets with King Redaxe inside his weathered fortress. Redaxe confirms everything Shandri said, though he’s unsure of what the party’s motivations are. If they’re not Lord’s Alliance, what are they doing here?

Gotwald is down for taking out pirates pro bono (though the King is nearly insulted that pirates have made any claim on his island). But Savra rolls a nat 20 on a Persuasion check (while casting friends) to sell their services as a contract: 200gp each to clear the island of any threats.

She has the mic-drop moment of pointing out the ship they came in on once belonged to pirates!

The King agrees, telling them to check on Fiskrbak, as well as this mysterious metal ship from the sky that crashed nearby. The party also asks about any mines on the island (as per the note they found on the Sea Ghost). Redaxe confirms the location of Berranzo Mine, suspiciously also near Fiskrbak.

While their ship is getting upgraded, the party sets out for a three-day travel across the mountain trails of the small island. They leave their crew behind to enjoy some shore-leave, while making sure Bern is kept on the ship, under the watch of their bosun, Frithoff.

Yet after a day and a half of travel, they spot someone awkwardly trying to follow them — it’s Bern! The teenager is clearly suffering from some malady that’s affecting him physically and mentally, resulting in damp skin, black eyes, and a cryptic muttering phrase: “Ship from the sky, devils from the sea.”

Shandri was unable to cure him, and Redaxe had suggested putting him on the fateful ship to Neverwinter, as proof of the dangers plaguing them. Bern had been found half-dead, washed up on shore near Gundbarg. A few locals recognized him as being from Fiskrbak.

On the trail, Bern looks in the direction the party is traveling and says a new word, “home.” He seems adamant about walking with them to Fiskrbak.

Redaxe had warned that while the island is normally safe, he’s had to pull his guards and patrols back to the city to deal with the many threats plaguing them. And as mentioned, they hadn’t heard anything from Fiskrbak, nor the scouts who were sent there.

Towards the end of the day they travel down a particularly winding mountain trail when they hear an eerie song, then another. Savra’s detect magic begins going haywire as half the party is charmed by the alluring melodies. What could it be!? (Your guess is probably correct).
