After exploring the crashed nautiloid the Zoo Crew find themselves in a rare situation: being able to plan ahead! Thanks to some reconnaissance scouting from Mac and Torrel, they know a sahuagin shipwreck lair lies at the bottom of the sea not far from the beach.

During a long rest they formulate a simple plan to try and draw the sea devils away from their home turf: Gotwald will swim out and act like a wounded animal.

Who wants prime rib?

Before heading out, Gotwald doffs his plate mail and puts on his Mariner’s Armor (Chain Shirt), lowering his AC but granting a swim speed. He also drinks one of the strange potions found in the crashed alien ship with a bubble icon, gaining the effects of the air bubble spell. Gotwald becomes one with the water!

Thanks to the magical buffs, Gotwald effortlessly swims out to the shipwreck, getting just close enough to spot the wreckage beneath the waves. He slices his hand to drip some blood in the water.

The effect is near instant. The shark-folk, along with several actual sharks, snap their heads up. One of them barks out commands, and a sahuagin, takes off toward him, flanked by two reef sharks.

Gotwald takes off back toward the surface and his allies. The Mariner’s Armor grants him magical swimming, but the sharks and sahuagin are faster. He powers ahead as they catch up just as Gotwald breaks the surface.

The sahuagin races up to stab at him. But he’s at he surface of the water, and an arrow from the sharpshooting tortle ends his life in a single twang.

One of the sharks darts over to Gotwald, and he uses his mighty strength to lift the flailing fish out of the water, allowing Savra to blast it in the face with a chromatic orb, raining shark viscera atop the fighter.

The final shark is left to Gotwald to gore, proving he’s the stronger marine creature.

What an ass-kicking — great plan, and well-executed teamwork!

Gotwald estimates they took out about half the guards. Mac and Savra drink the other strange potions, Mac gaining the blur spell and Savra getting temp hit points. Savra also drinks one of the potions of water breathing they had purchased in Gundbarg. The lizard wizard still refuses to get in the cold water, however, forcing Gotwald to yeet her.

call from the deep wreck of the golden crown p1

They split up and descend into the sea, with Gotwald returning the way he came to draw the now-hyper aware remaining guards’ attention. Savra and Mac flank from above, but even with advantage they fail to sneak-swim up to the guards. No surprise round!

Thankfully Savra rolls better than the guards. She unleashes a shatter spell a the two manning the still-functioning ballistae, destroying the weapons and badly injuring the two sahuagin, allowing Mac and Gotwald to quickly clean them up.

The leader of the guards, a sahuagin raider, tries desperately to attack from range using his poison spit and a thrown net, both missing. He flees down into a hole in the ship, trying to call for reinforcements. Savra drinks her potion of comprehension and learns that he’s going to “warn Karg.”

Another sahuagin swims up to stab at Gotwald, and the minotaur needs to use Second Wind to maintain his confidence. He crushes it with a mighty blow, while Mac picks up the thrown net, follows the raider, and hurls the net, trapping the creature inside!

Everyone rallies and surrounds the trapped sahuagin. Even without the net the poor bastard was unable to hit a damn thing due to bad dice rolls, and the frenzied sea devil is soon put down.

Clearly got his job due to net-potism.

The Zoo Crew successfully clear the ship of guards in some of the most impressive combat encounters we’ve seen then pull off yet, due to both planning and great dice rolls (at least four crits rolled by our PCs!).

Now they find themselves in the middle of an underwater shipwreck with several rooms, including a mysteriously chained door off the main deck, and at least one boss sahuagin named Karg lurking somewhere within.
