Torrel, level 6 kenku Fathomless Warlock Pact of the Amulet/Fighter

Having dealt with the lizardfolk in the swampy village, the party moves on toward the fortress on the other side of the earthmote.

Rumors say the black dragon Garrundar chased Captain Blackdagger and his flying ship back across the sea, until the retreated inside this fortress, where he killed every last one of them, and raised them as undead servants.

A lone tower rests on the outskirts of the mountain path leading up to the fortress. Inside, they discover a stone table, with the map of the Sword Cost carved on top. Cities and landmarks are labeled with engraved lettering.

A flying ship is mounted on a rod near Neverwinter, with all the letters of the alphabet fanned out nearby, like buttons on a keyboard.

Savra discovers some of the buttons are more worn than others, including the letter “C,” and she’s certain most of the vowels are used at least once.

They press the letter “C,” but the button pops back out, and a forceful explosion rocks out from the table, damaging everyone in the room.

The party’s a bit more cautious after that, sifting through notes and memories to find the code. Mac even goes back and asks a local villager, but they don’t go beyond the village for fear of the undead pirates that lurk around the fortress.

Just when the party is ready to give up and move on, Mac decides to try the name of the pirates’ ship, Black Scourge.

The password is a success! The table cracks open, revealing a small cache of treasure, including potions and some magic gloves. Will we forget about these as yet-unidentified gloves for a few sessions? Quite possibly!

At the foot of the mountain path is an empty building with a note from one of Captain Blackdagger’s subordinates, bemoaning his hubris and worried about the dragon circling around the earthmote as they retreat to the fortress.

They begin the ascent. They spot some movement along the nearest tower, and Mac begins shouting about bringing them Genocider.

These skeletal pirates couldn’t care less, however, and open fire with their catapult, launching acid-filled barrels that explode on impact!

Mac and Gotwald take a nasty blast of acid and shrapnel, forcing Gotwald to charge forward while Mac takes cover as another barrel comes flying through the air.

call from the deep pirates skyhold fortress

Torrel unleashes his tentacle void (Hunger of Hadar) over the tower, drenching it in cold darkness and milky tentacles, effectively shutting down the whole thing and destroying the skeletons inside!

Gotwald races toward the other tower near the entrance, embiggening so he can clamber up the west wall, while Savra and her slow zombies shuffle up the trail toward the main entrance.

Mac’s Ranger abilities grant him a climbing speed, and he parkours up and over the wall on the east side, remaining stealthy. Savra makes it to the main entrance and climbs up using her Slippers of Spider Climbing, splitting the party even further.

And yet, these skeletal pirates don’t stand a chance. Gotwald’s magical Anchor Axe deals bludgeoning damage, and it absolutely demolishes a skeleton with every swing. And he never misses. He wades through half a dozen skeletons on the west side, taking a few arrow shots here and there.

A massive minotaur skeleton comes charging out of some stairs below, and Gotwald deflects the gore with his Cloud Rune, killing another skeletal pirate in the process.

Torrel blasts open the sealed doors, and the entire party is able to converge on the hulking skeleton, downing it in a single round!

Mac begins sniping skellys through arrows slits in the keep as the Captain finally joins the fight. By the time Blackdagger (a revenant) and the skeletons open the door, the party is ready for them. Torrel blasts with eldritch blasts and his tentacular arm, Mac fires arrows, Savra commands zombies, and Gotwald charges forward with his axe.

Savra even unleashes a 30-damage upcasted shatter spell, oye!

The Captain and his cronies are nearly destroyed (again) when they suddenly go slack, point toward the stairs, and say in monotone unison: “Enough! The Master will see you now.”
