Ten years ago, the Ghoul Imperium of the Underworld and the vampires of Morgau marched into Krakova and conquered the kingdom entirely, establishing the Greater Duchy of Morgau and expanding the borders of the Blood Kingdom.

The undead occupation has been kept in check by resistance from the Court-in-Exile, as well as opportunistic reaver dwarves who sailed across the Nieder Straits.

But the hidden machinations of the ghouls swirl beneath the surface. Rumors abound of an even more sinister plot that threatens not just one kingdom, but the entire world of Midgard.

Empire of the Ghouls is designed by Richard Green, and published by Kobold Press. It takes place in Kobold Press’ fantasy world of Midgard.

Chapter 4: Catacombs of the Ghul King
Episode 7: The Ghul King’s Catacomb p3

Active Party:
Alaric, level 9 dhampir Death Domain Cleric/Bard
Bahn, level 9 kobold Bard College of Whispers
Ry, level 9 shadow fey Black Powder Sorcerer
Zaberi, level 9 human Battle Master Fighter/Wizard
and special guest Rackish, level 9 half-elf Way of Mercy Monk – played by Chris!

I/O and Lucian had disappeared. The party was rejoined by Rackish, finally making his way to the lower levels, and a newcomer, Zaberi. The warrior had been sent by Shafiqa to investigate the necropolis, found the secret opening to the lower levels, and made it to our heroes right as they throw open the doors to Kaya’s chamber.

Kaya is a vampiric owl harpy who laired in the tomb before the Ghul King was freed. She and the Ghul King have a tenuous agreement to defend his lair, and she loves it when food comes directly to her!

She casts darkness on the entryway and summons several swarms of insects. But Rackish’s monk speed is undeterred, sprinting through the magical darkness and hurtling a dart as she flies, breaking her concentration!

From there the party rushes in to attack her with range attacks. Her harpy music charms Zaberi and Bahn, but Alaric pulls her down with his dark magic, and she’s pummeled by Ry and Rackish.

Alaric unleashes radiant blasts from the holy robes of Sister Adelind not once, but twice, and the screeching vampire has had enough. She tries to flee down the northern hallway, but that pesky speedy monk catches up to her at Alaric’s behest, and quickly finishes her off.

Ry finds some magic loot in her nest, including a brooch of shielding and Quaal’s feather token whip, and a hidden trapdoor.

After a short rest, Zaberi uses her owl familiar to scout down the trapdoor, finding an even larger chamber about 30 feet down, along with several undead, and the towering Ghul King himself, who promptly blasts the owl.

Mustering their strength, the party descends into his chambers.

empire of the ghouls ghul king fight

The Ghul King is annoyed by their perseverance, but confident he can destroy them.

His master of sand and lightning prove formidable as he summons an air elemental, static lighting arcs, and numerous blasting thunderwaves.

The entire chamber is strewn with broken relics and piles of gold, and the difficult terrain proves vexing for Zaberi. Rackish deals with the zombies, but the air elemental manages to down Bahn, forcing Alaric to heal the little kobold.

Ry focuses on the big guy, summoning his faithful hound of the fey, and blasting him with carefully aimed fireballs.

The air elemental goes down. The Ghul King casts fear, nailing Rackish and the hound and forcing them backwards. But Zaberi trudges forward and unleashes a string of brutal attacks combining great weapon master with the trip maneuver.

A summoned mummy falls down the shaft ready to enter the fight, but Rackish takes it out with a flurry, stunning, combo that leaves it nearly destroyed in a single turn.

Ry gets the final boss kill with a final fireball, and it’s all over.

The party help themselves to some loot, but are careful to leave all the official Elia family treasure alone.

The ghostly forms of Masudi and Makani appear and thank them for ending their torment, through their new unlives appear to be permanent.

The party returns to the surface and to Farra to report their success. She’s felt the negative energy lift from the necropolis. As promised, she rewards them with a magic book that allows them to appear as ghouls in the Underworld.

She also introduces them to sympathetic wizard, Ahmose, who studied in Krakova. He agrees to open a portal directly to the Underworld (no more shadow road shenanigans!) and gives the party a lead: a deposed ghoul lord named Narosain, whose death may have been greatly exaggerated, and is no friend to the current Imperium. He could be an unlikely ally in the mission ahead.
