The prison hasn’t been cleared, but the wounded party is ready to leave. The Marshals know their next destination: the Island of Solstice, a holy place of power for Auril the Frostmaiden. The ship at Revel’s End had been taken by the villainous Gant and Lantomir.

Thankfully they still have their flying nautiloid.

The party ushers the survivors from the prison onto the ship. Vorryn the gnome ceremorph is pleased to have fresh brains, but Valravn enters into a lengthy debate over the consumption of sentient creatures.

Edmond takes a shine to Huarwar, the only surviving prisoner at Revel’s End. The young man is suffering from prolonged chardalyn exposure, manifesting as increasing madness and obsession, and begins treating him like an overgrown lab rat.

After a long rest and a level up, the nautiloid takes off into the Sea of Moving Ice, searching for the island. Exploring from the air is much safer and more efficient. It only takes the better part of a single day before a small, icy island wreathed in fog comes into view.

At the same time, a magical bolt of lighting slams into the airship, destroying its psi crystal and arcing into several of the bewildered Marshals. Their ceremorph pilot is thrown from his spelljamming helm as the ship lurches. They’re going down!

Edmond races to the outer deck and scans the dark, foggy air. He sees the massive form of Arveiaturace, the great White Wyrm of Icewind Dale, barreling down on them. The same dragon whom they had previously met, tricked, and stolen from!

Worried about their pilot, Valravn administers a potion of healing to Vorryn. The ceremorph regains his composure and clambers back onto the helm. They’re still going down, but he will try to crash onto the island instead of the freezing waters and sharp rocks.

Fray runs outside and begins firing her Wand of Magic Missiles at the dragon. The ancient white dragon responds by enveloping the entire ship in her devastating frost breath.

Entire chunks of the ship flash freeze and break away. Everyone fails the DC 22 CON save except for Edmond (Flash of Genius!). Dzaan and the cooks are instantly brought down, though the pilot (and Huarwar) barely survive the 60 cold damage blast.

Valravn uses his Charm of the Ice Troll from the Chwinga to reduce the damage to zero. Clutch!

The ship continues to rocket toward the ground. Edmond begins using his charm to cast Leomund’s Tiny Hut, though the 1 minute casting time is concerning! Fray and Valravn try to get the dragon’s attention, hoping she recognizes them.

Rime of the frostmaiden session 63 arveiaturace

She does indeed, but their protestations backfire.

Arvy is attacking this vessel as a mind flayer threat to her territory. Business as usual for an alpha predator. But when she recognizes the Marshals, she grows angry, smelling her treasure upon them, and cursing them for stealing from her. Now it’s personal!

She catches up to the careening ship, tearing up more chunks with her claws, biting Valravn, and smacking Fray with her tail. Everyone is enveloped in her Frightful Presence, preventing anyone from mounting a proper counter-attack.

The Marshals have bigger problems: their ship is about to slam into the ground.

But this party is level 11, with tons of fun options.

Edmond cancels the hut spell and activates his Boots of Flying. Fray has her Boots of the Vind Rune, which can cast Featherfall on up to five people. And Valravn casts Bigby’s Hand, encasing himself in its protective yet gentle grasp.

Their NPC allies are not so lucky. Only the nearby ceremorph pilot is saved by Celeste (collectively controlled by the party this session).

Those with controlled flight attempt to follow with the ship, while the Feather Fallers have little choice but to dangerous float down as the dragon makes another painful pass, using the full powers of her triple multi-attack on the vulnerable fliers and floaters.

The fliers stay in the air and try to split off as the ship crashes to the ground. The floaters land nearby. Just as the dragon makes another run at them, she whips her head around.

“Meltharond,” she whispers to her dead wizard companion, “Do you know where we are? I was caught up in killing that mind flayer ship and these scheming thieves I didn’t realize… This is Her territory, Meltharond. The island!

She turns to the Marshals. “I would like to finish you myself. But there’s no need. You’ll never leave this island alive!”

Edmond fires his arm cannon blast, while Fray launches another magic missile volley, striking the dynamite still stuck in the corpse’s body. The stick explodes, causing the saddle to loosen and the body to sag. The dragon shrieks, and apologies to the Frostmaiden for her intrusion!

Arveiatruace quickly flies off, leaving the Marshals to stare at their crashed airship, and the island that scared an ancient white dragon.
