Previously on Rime of the Frostmaiden

Starring:
Valravn, level 11 Eladrin Bard of Eloquence
Fray, level 11 Halfling Barbarian of the Beast
Celeste, level 11 Half-orc Sun Soul Monk
Edmond, Level 11 Human Alchemist Artificer
Thimbleweed, level 11 Thri-kreen Swarmkeeper Ranger

Having survived a dragon attack and a crashed airship, the Marshals are now stranded on the Island of Solstice.

The small island is supernaturally cold and covered with an oppressive fog. Yet in the distance they can make out a towering mountain less than a mile away. The mountain is carved into the shape of a skull with a crown upon its head.

Before heading off toward skull mountain (aka one of the best Mighty Max toys!), the Marshals decide to explore a nearby shipwreck.

The shipwreck has been split in half on the jagged, icy coast, and covered in frost.

Thimbleweed and Edmond drink potions of cold resistance, activate their flying abilities, and hover over the ship to get a better look, discovering numerous frozen bodies.

Edmond flies down for a closer look to examine the bodies, when they begin to stir.

Half the bodies form into icy skeletons, ripping bony longbows out of their own bodies, while the others project frosty wraiths yearning for warmth.

Edmond does the smart thing and casts Flaming Sphere to slam into the nearest frost ghost. Yet he’s met with shock as the creature reacts positively to the sudden source of warmth, not taking any damage at all (in fact it would have healed had it been injured).

He’s met with a second dose of shock as he flies away from them, yet the ghosts simply fly after him! Fortunately for him he’s able to inexplicably dodge every single attack that comes his away, despite being in the middle of the battle for the entire duration.

Celeste throws her new Searing Sunburst ability into the ship, blasting into several of the frozen enemies and discovering that radiant damage does just fine! Fray charges into the ship to slice with her axe, at one point getting her weapon empowered by a hilariously weak Lighting Arrow shot by Thimbleweed (also a new level 11 ability/spell).

Valravn jumps atop a newly summoned Lord Marbury to cast spells from afar, noting that Slow won’t be much good against enemies who don’t have multi-attack.

After the first round the undead captain emerges from below deck — a coldlight walker!

Rime of the frostmaiden session 64 shipwreck

The walker is able to blind the nearby Celeste, though Valravn’s pesky Silvery Barbs keep it from doing too much damage. She responds by nailing it with a Stunning Strike!

The rest of the party converge on the walker, swiftly downing it.

Edmond spawns a saber-tooth tiger from his Bag of Tricks, continuing his incredible streak of spawning the most powerful creatures from the random assortment within.  After that, it’s a simple matter of taking out the trash.

With the last of the undead destroyed, the party notice the name on the boat, the Ravenous, the same ship that was docked at Revel’s End, and had ferried (perhaps unwillingly) Nass and Vaelish to the island.

In the partially submerged hold the party discovers to chests worth looting. One contains hundreds of gold, while the other includes some always helpful potions.

Though most of the party has cold resistance (temporary or otherwise), Edmond decides to err on the side of caution, using his charm gained from the chwinga to create a Leomund’s Tiny Hut for a safe short rest.

Fully healed, the party begins the trek across the foggy island. Thimbleweed uses his expert survival skills to navigate through a blizzard, but on the other side they’re met with an assortment of arctic creatures: polar bear, saber-tooth tiger, even an animated pine tree!

Each creature has a human riding atop wrapped in furs, but it’s the bear who speaks:

“Lost ones. You have entered the domain of the Frostmaiden. Whether by chance or purpose is irrelevant. Only by her will, and your tenacity, will see you through.”

Valravn asks about others who may have passed through here, but the bear isn’t interested in giving a detailed report. Then the winds whip up, and all their hands snap up, eyes flashing blue. They declare that the Frostmaiden has called for a test of strength!
