Starring:
Kaelan, level 16 tiefling Monster Slayer Ranger/Fiend Warlock
Scarlet, level 16 human Oath of Devotion Paladin
Gillian, level 16 triton Champion Fighter, College of Lore Bard
Kethra, level 16 half-elf Assassin Rogue
TIM, level 16 warforged War Domain Cleric

Scarlet’s muscles tightened, her face ringed with sweat as she rowed our boat toward land, but she never once stopped singing that damn hymn. We slam into the beach, some of us rolling out more gracefully than others.

I steal a glance back to the sea to watch that giant red fin circle a few times in the distance, then dip below the water. Thankfully a giant Devil Shark is still just a shark, though I suppose we’ll have to be mindful of it when it’s time to leave the island.

Dusting ourselves off we begin walking inland. We weren’t sure where to begin our search, when Rycresh speaks up,

“The stewards of this island, the natives, live in a little village toward the east. They might know something. Or we could go straight to the temple, where the creator goes to welcome new citizens. It’s to the north.”

Before we can reply, a series of sharp twangs rings out from the tree line ahead of us. Several crossbow bolts fire toward us. I feel a sharp thud, and look down to see a wickedly barbed bolt buried in my chest. Suddenly the bolt explodes with electric energy. Every nerve screams at once as I vibrate in place, unable to act or think.

Having freed the slaad from the shackles of celestial enslavement, we made our way out of the Twisted Caverns. The only minor hiccup was recovering TIM’s hard-bought Rug of Slumber from the fomorian.

Scarlet and TIM used brute strength to try and rip it off and high-tail it out of there. That was the plan, at least. They weren’t quite successful, and Scarlet received a nasty bash from the angry fomorian’s club before we were able to fully escape and greet the sky once again.

Feogh remained behind to lead the slaad toward the spire to defend against any further attacks. He also mentioned that the celestial had been probing his mind, searching for locations, including the one we were headed to before, Summit Island, the last known location of the creator of this plane.

After leveling to 16, we set off on our original journey toward the island, skirting the desert so as to avoid the massive earth-quake causing creature called the World Ender (I’m sure we’ll never have to go into that desert… right?).

Then it was back to the folding boat as we made a week-long journey across a chain of tiny islands, noting the odd and exotic geography and denizens of this world, including a tribe of little coconut people.

During the last stint of the journey, Kaelan sensed demons all around with his Primeval Awareness. In fact, one was hurtling directly toward us. Sure enough we could see a massive red fin on the horizon, cutting through the water. Some kind of fiendish sea creature?

D&D

We were still about 2,000 feet from the island. We had a bit of time to prepare before the creature closed in on us. Scarlet cast Heroism and Kaelan cast Lightning Arrow, while TIM summoned a whirlpool in front of us using Control Water.

The whirlpool proved instrumental in the battle. A massive Devil Shark surged toward us, with half a dozen other, regular sharks in its two. Almost all of them slammed into the whirlpool. The Devil Shark was trapped, but opened its mouth to  breathe a cone of cold on all of us huddled up in the boat – over 50 damage, and knocking us 20 feet back, into the water.

Ironically knocking us off the boat may have saved us. A few smaller sharks were able to escape the whirlpool, but TIM and Gillian cut them down with spells and phase axe, while the other sharks remained trapped. Thankfully TIM, with Scarlet’s helpful aura, maintained concentration of the Whirlpool in the face of that single cold breath attack from the Devil Shark.

Being in in the middle of the ocean with a single tiny boat is not where you want to fight a horde of sharks. Kethra climbed into the boat and helped pick us back up, while Scarlet rowed like she never rowed before. With the remaining sharks still trapped (and Kaelan unable to hit the broad side of a shark), we were able to escape the entire battle and make it to shore.

We landed on a beach, and the entire island lie before us, including a temple, a waterfall, a village, and a volcano that was suspiciously spewing black smoke into the air. We made our way inland to decide where to go first, when several crossbow bolts shot out of the trees. Most missed, but one of them slammed into Kaelan for a critical hit: 65 damage, plus paralyzing him with an additional electric blast.

Needless to say, he was quite shocked. Everyone drew weapons but the air was still again. So much for a welcoming party.
