The pond looks innocuous on the surface. We know better. Kethra and I keep our weapons close as Gillian dives into the water. The symbol was probably down there somewhere, but we were leery of the “Lord of the Pond” the stewards spoke of.

Gillian didn’t get far into the pond before a large humanoid shape arose. The fish-man spreads his arms and smiles at us.

“Hello! You are my servants, yes? My new servants, I knew you’d be here soon!”

The party was split for this entire session. Team Village consisted of Scarlet, TIM, and our little NPC ally from the village, Brihat, while Team Pond (which we renamed to Team Awesome) had Gillian, Kethra, and Kaelan.

Team Village headed to the village on the east side of the island, now a smoldering ruin filled with corpses. We were warned by the survivors that the dead were restless here, and so sent our two anti-undead holy warriors to take care of business. Their goal was to find the body of the village elder, record the symbol on his body, and take his whistle that summons a giant turtle to get us safely off this island.

Of course, Scarlet and TIM aren’t the brightest, cleverest, or sneakiest of the bunch. When they saw a burning wraith stalking the outskirts of the village, TIM cast Create Water to attempt to put it out.

The water failed to do anything but trigger the wraith to attack, which summoned half a dozen twisted undead ghosts to converge.

Meanwhile, Team Awesome approached the pond, remembering the clue about the Lord of the Pond. They approached cautiously, sending Gillian in the water to talk to the fish. These were no ordinary fish, however, having disturbing human faces.

As Gillian swam towards them, a large figure rose out of the water. We readied our weapons, but the fish-man smiled, spread out his scaly arms, and welcomed us to his kingdom, declaring himself King of not just the pond, but the whole island. Clearly, we were his servants.

Kethra jumped at the opportunity, convincing the marid that we were indeed his servants, and Gillian could be his court musician. While Gillian played, Kaelan sent an invisible Styx below the water to get to the symbol. Styx is stealthy, but not strong, and had a terrible time fighting the forest of kelp that obscured the underwater symbol. We’d have to escalate our little con.

Meanwhile Team Village had entered combat with the undead wraiths. Scarlet used Turn the Unholy, but TIM’s Spirit Guardians were doing constant damage every round. The two tanky warriors stood their ground, rebuffing the screaming that threatened to incapacitate or enrage them, while Scarlet’s radiant-powered Divine Smites began destroying them one by one.

The symbol in the pond was proving a challenge for the imp, and Kethra noticed the marid was adorned with nice-looking jewelry. She convinced him that we were professional masseuses, and approached the bulbous, pompous fish man, while Kaelan used Mage Hand to help Styx.

Kethra convinced Kaelan to help rub lantern oil on the marid’s scaly body. Turns out Kaelan is quite adept at using his hands (Nat 20 Sleight of Hand!), leaving the lord of the pond moaning while Kethra deftly stripped him of his jewels. Gillian used the distraction to dive underwater and help Styx uncover the last piece of the symbol.

Over at the village, the last of the wraiths were finally destroyed. There were more up ahead, seemingly oblivious to the battle that had occurred. Brihat pointed out the pile of bodies stacked up in the center of the village. Scarlet ran up to distract the remaining wraiths, while TIM sorted through the bodies.

Hilariously, Scarlet destroyed or turned all the wraiths before TIM finished sorting the bodies. The two of them found the loxodon corpse, the symbol, and the whistle. Brihat took the whistle back to his village, while TIM and Scarlet made their way to the volcano.

At the pond, the marid was in a fit of post-massage ecstasy (what happens at the pond, stays at the pond). Team Awesome began making their casual escape. Right when they reached land and began folding the boat, the marid realized his jewels were missing, blasting a stream of water after the escaping trio as they hauled butt to the volcano.

Both teams were successful in wildly different ways. Now we had three of the four symbols required to gain entrance to the temple. The final resided in the volcano.
