I hide in darkness, sweat pouring from my brow, hands clenched, keeping the demon banished. I had never wielded such arcane power before. The slightest provocation may break my resolve. And I was being hunted.

I risk a glance around the corner. Magical darkness poured out of the last remaining demonic dragon, rendering it invisible once again.

But Kethra is in there with it. Seconds later, a triumphant Kethra strides out of the darkness, the black beast struggling in its grip, as she purposefully drags it toward Scarlet.

The shining paladin hefts her sentient sword, and with one lightning-fast swing, decapitates the abishai.

After two days the giant turtle-island arrived at the Under Manor, the hidden lair of the Creator. We leveled up to 17 and bid farewell to the surviving islanders – though not before Kethra stole the whistle that summons the turtle. It could come in handy!

The turtle left to bring the survivors to the Verdant Spire, the only safe area of this entire world. We noticed areas we had journeyed through before were now scorched and destroyed, the results of a terrible war between powerful creatures.

The Under Manor was hidden in a cave guarded by a stone giant. Kaelan used Disguise Self to make himself appear like the Creator (based on the body and projection we saw) to ease the meeting with the giant.

We made our way carefully into the cave, noting a petrified basilisk and large clusters of glittering quartz. Sounds of battle drew our attention to the northeast, where we saw the stone giant under attack by a trio of demonic-looking dragons. Abishai!

Scarlet ran forward to protect the giant, while the green abishai charged us with its venom-tipped claws. We surrounded and quickly struck it down. The blue abishai, clutching a staff (smugly 5-ft out of range of Kaelan’s Counterspell), unleashed a Chain Lightning on TIM and Scarlet. Kaelan responded by casting his new Banishment spell on the spellcaster, sending it back to hell.

The banishment would become permanent if Kaelan could maintain concentration for one minute. The white abishai seemed to recognize this, and charged. A crit fumble earlier left his sword spinning into a dark corner of the cave, but he still had his nasty bite.

The attack missed, but the giant was shouting something a sneaky black one that she had lost track of. As if on cue, a black abishai wielding daggers emerged form the darkness to stab Kaelan.

D&D

Kaelan had retread to Gillian, and she protected him with Cutting Words, causing the attack to miss. A second attack hit by Kaelan made the CON save, barely (despite a measly +2).

Kaelan’s fleeing continued, Misty Stepping away from the black and white abishai and running toward Scarlet, who used Sanctuary to protect him. The others defeated the white abishai, including a 75 damage sneak attack crit by Kethra. The dice were definitely in our favor in this battle, getting three critical attacks, while the abishai had at least as many critical fumbles.

With the blue still banished, only the black remained, but he proved a tricky bastard, capable of unleashing an aura of magical Darkness before dropping invisible. Being hunted by an invisible monster is terrifying but Kaelan had another trick up his sleeve, the One with Shadows invocation. Kaelan ran to a darkened area of the cave and became invisible. Ha!

Kethra’s blindsight became a critical tool against the black abishai, able to locate him despite the invisibility. She found him trying to chase Kaelan, stabbing him, and calling to TIM to stride forward with his Light spell. The spell lit up the invisible creature, allowing the stone giant, who had been reeling from the battle, throw a giant rock, slamming it to the ground.

When it tried to get up, Kethra stabbed it, injecting it with her Rust Blade and slowing it down. It responded by once again spewing Darkness, but Kethra was ready for it, grappling it and physically pulling it out of the dark zone, and striding up towards Scarlet. Scarlet did not hesitate when she swung her sword, critically hitting and destroying the pesky abishai.

After about 30 more tense seconds, Kaelan (still disguised as the Creator) strode from the shadows, much more composed, with the blue abishai successfully banished. The stone giant thanked the Creator for coming to her aid. We probably should have guessed our enemies had made it this far, but hopefully they haven’t found the hidden lair itself.
