Previously on Tomb of Annihilation

Starring:
Mannix, level 6 Human Inquisitive Rogue/Wizard
Khaless, level 6 Half-Drow Assassin Rogue
Gillian, level 6 Triton Bard of Whispers
George, level 6 Tortle Battle Master Fighter/Rogue
Therin, level 6 Hill Dwarf Druid of the Moon

The party finally levels up to 6 and arrives in the smokey, ash-filled Shilku Bay, marking the end of their ship-borne excursions around Chult. But the final leg of the trip is cut short when a red dragon descends upon the ship.

The party discovered too late that Tinder, the red dragon who makes her home in Wyrmheart Mine, patrols in a large radius around her nest, and a ship is easy to spot, even through the smoke-filled clouds.

Everyone except Mannix was blasted by dragon fire, downing Gillian, transforming Therin back to his natural form, and nearly taking out George and Khaless in a single blow. As the dragon began to circle back around, the team wasted no time in getting the hell out, beginning with George grabbing the unconscious Gillian and jumping off the boat.

Therin cast his new spell Water Breathing as he fell in with George, while Khaless bought them some time by using Darkness. Mannix screamed below deck to get their dwarven allies moving, but Captain Ortimay stayed behind on the ship, as the rest of her few crew was roasted alive.

The party hid below water as the dragon passed by several times, breathing fire and destroying the ship, until it began to break apart. Finally it flew back toward the north.

The party, using Therin’s water breathing, slowly swam the final few miles to shore, back onto the jungles of Chult, where they collapsed into a long rest.

At this point they weren’t sure they wanted to mess with such a powerful creature. Hew was insistent, believing that catching the dragon in the mine rather than out in the open would be their best chance.

Regardless, the mine was on their way toward Omu. They trudged north the next day, but that evening they were attacked by a pair of large leopard-like creatures with snakes sprouting out of their necks. A Chultan monstrosity known as the kamadan. One of them expelled a gas that knocked half the party unconscious.

D&d

Mannix had the clever idea to use his wand of magic missiles to simultaneously wake everyone up, with a little magical poking. The dice were definitely on the side of the players for this battle, as they would land some nasty crits while I mostly fumbled attacks. Even when a third and fourth kamadan joined the fight, it was over far quicker and easier than I anticipated.

With the monstrous beasts felled, George could harvest their sleep glands and snake skins to complete more of his personal monster-hunting recipes. His rewards will be doled out next week, along with the entrance to Wyrmheart Mine.
