On a very special episode of Tomb of Annihilation – we temporarily handed over the Dungeon Master’s seat to my wife, Heather, AKA Khaless, AKA Bryseis, AKA Miri. Long time player, first time DM!

I got to embody an NPC as a player, and Raymond’s wife Oanh joined us for another guest star to bring our player count up to four.

We still had a reduced player count but didn’t want to skip another week. A one-off episode was a solid solution. Instead of putting together a side adventure with all new characters, however, she had the smart idea to use our current crew in a fun little magical side trek while they slept on the Brazen Pegasus heading toward Shilku Bay.

And I do mean little – enter A Quest for Cheese!

While the party slept aboard the Brazen Pegasus following their excursions in the Typhoon Palace, a tiefling woman appeared. She was pleased to see her loyal agent, Rokah, had been rescued and was alive and well. It was Bryseis!

Bryseis used some king of magical spell or powder to transform several of the crew members into tiny mice: George, Mannix, Rokah, and random pirate crew member Pervy, though their bodies remained peacefully sleeping on the cots above.

Rokah recognized his boss but wasn’t sure what was going on, clearly some kind of weird test. The pint-size heroes followed an excitable gerbil into a mouse hole, emerging into a large amphitheater filled with cheering rodents. The large rat king bestowed a quest upon the heroes: to retrieve a treasure – the wheel of cheese. As a reward, the ‘witch’ will return us to our regular bodies.

We were each given a small piece of cheese and unceremoniously shoved through a door and left. George immediately ate his cheese, naturally, revealing it to grant the effects of a Potion of Greater Healing.

We crept through a spider-web filled tunnel lined with glowing sconces, and narrowly avoiding an arrow trap. Around a corner we found bloodstains on the ground, and a dreadful purring sound as a gigantic cat emerged and pounced on Mannix.

The cat was large and powerful compared to our diminutive state, but the four of us had it outnumbered. Mannix quickly gobbled his healing cheese to stay alive while we slashed at it with out tiny swords and bows, bringing it down. For our efforts the giant feline simply faded away, as if an illusion (albeit a very painful one).

Further into the tunnel George’s mind was seized by a seductive voice, and he raced ahead – with us foolishly holding on tight. He sprinted into a mess of cobwebs where we found the source of the psychic voice – a huge mass of spiders had amalgamated into one giant spider, and brought us directly into its web-lined lair.

The spider was terrifyingly huge but the dice did the DM no favors, missing its attacks while we surrounded it, though George was briefly charmed again toward the end.

Like the cat, the giant spider also vanished from view. A nearby door lead us to a third creature, a red dragon atop a treasure pile. But this time we were ready for the illusion, and Mannix saw right through it. We found the treasure and a scroll that promised a gift upon our return.

We quickly backtracked through the gauntlet of traps and illusion beasts, returning to the rodent arena. The rodents were surprised to see us, and ready to turn on us. Thankfully Bryseis magically appeared and killed the rat king – apparently someone she was hunting!

For the rest of us, she restored us to our true bodies, but not before taking Rokah and Pervy with her. As for her gift, she fixed Mannix’s crippled leg, restoring at least part of his broken body. She also handed over the trapped souls of Therin, Gillian, and Khaless.

Bryseis used another magical effect to erase our memories, and we all awoke, but with Rokah completely gone.

It was an awesome self-contained adventure and Heather did a great job DMing! Next week we’ll finally return to our regular programming as the Brazen Pegasus arrives at Shilku Bay, with everyone leveled up to 6.
